They bundle features in apps that, IMO, oftentimes do NOT make sense. CD Architect features in the multitrack program instead of the two track editor? VI support in Acid but NOT in the multitrack program? As if only loopers are interested in soft synths?  IMO, SF tries to sell too many apps and their product catalog is far too fragmented. IMO, they should have a good 2 track editor, a good multitrack app for audio / MIDI / video - and that should include the looping capabilities. Make a "lite" version for the budget challenged and sell Acid loop libraries and various plug in bundles. THAT'S IT.

For audio for video, Vegas Video absolutely, totally rocks. The handling of video is wonderful, the effects are useful, and the audio capabilities are extremely sophisticated for a video editing program. I love it. But to replace something like Sonar DP Logic Cubase etc? There are two fatal flaws, at least for me: 1. No MIDI or soft synth support 2. Can't tie the faders to MIDI control signals But hey, it's a video program...and for that, it's fabulous. The audio is icing on the cake.

I have been a vegas user since the beta days of vegas 1. Back then I dont think anyone had any illusions of it being a video app, tho it DID let you mess with video, it was the audio side's UI that got a lot interested in it. Vegas' user interface is too incredible to put into words. There is no comparison anywhere for any price. No need to constantly change mouse tools or open dialog boxes left and right, for editing vegas flies thru with a very few keystrokes what takes quite a lot of clicking and flicking in any other app. Audio guys, forget that it says " video " in the name of vegas 3, just try it. You will be hooked. You will sometimes rattle infuriated about the lack of a very few pro audio requirements, but you will not be able to end your addiction. Many of us have found workarounds, and indeed are able to accomplish all of what we need to do. Whatever your favorite app, try this, time yourself and count the keystrokes: Take an event, split it, drag the right side over to the left to an EXACT point in time, with the waveforms meeting EXACTLY right ( one side crossing zero one direction, other side crossing zero to complete), then crossfade them so there is no artifact the beuaty of vegas is this : click the event, hit "s" then drag the right side event to the left...thats IT !!!! I take constant abuse from those around me to switch to PT, without it costing me a single penny, and every time I try, I am back on vegas as soon as they turn around this is one insanely powerful app Pro audio users might be dissapointed that vegas in its fourth version still does not have Auto Input monitoring, but it does have a constant input monitoring model in Vegas 4. It begs questions about their audio thinking, and whoever is advising them on the audio recording side needs to be SHOT, and disbarred from the industry forever, but still... I urge proaudio users to give it a try. With a little more pressure from more proaudio users, we could probably get the last of the very few proaudio features we need implemented just click here: http://www.sonicfoundry.com/download/step2.asp?DID=435 give it a try By clicking the above link you agree to hold Aaron Carey NOT responsible for the complete obselescence of your other audio apps, and any damage to your sanity or wallet that may cause

"Phil and Steve's Sonic Foundary" - has a nice ring to it.

you guys are right on, but preaching to the choir they always released beta versions for anyone to try, if there were more pro users around, they probably might have made some better choices. as it is they have real knuckledragging knuckleheads advising them on certain issues, but really SF cant be blamed, they just got bad advice if you want things to be better, go try the demos for a while and go post up at http://www.sonicfoundry.com/forums/ShowTopics.asp?ForumID=19 or email suggestions to http://www.sonicfoundry.com/support/productsuggestion.asp I do quite more than my share of complaining, but really guys as audio professionals we gotta take some of the blame for not making our views known. Many of those at these kind of companies have never even SEEN a real studio, or even the gear that they are modelling. They need to trust those who use it for a living. It is unfortunate that voices of reason are somehow thought of as flaming or whatever, but if you want things better, SPEAK UP...it wont cost you anything...go grab the demo, and submit some feedback

Hey, I'm a Vegas owner, and it's a cool ap, insofar as it goes... but it gets creamed for pro applications beyond basic editing by other, more full featured applications. There's no surround. There's no softsynth support. No MIDI. etc. etc. etc. Back when I first got Vegas (1.0b, if memory serves), there was only one "Vegas". Then there were two - Vegas Audio and Vegas Video... then they "killed" Vegas Audio and made everyone go with Vegas Video. Well as Craig said "it's a video program". But that's the rub - I don't "do" video - I'm an audio engineer. And while I see the lines starting to blur more and more, the fact is that Vegas has many great features that don't appeal to the majority of audio professionals, while leaving basic, bread and butter features out that we need on a daily basis. Based on that, I can't really recommend it for anyone who needs any of the features that are left out of it. If all you need is basic multitrack editing, then it has a lot going for it. But most audio pros I know need more than Vegas currently offers. And for the record, I've made my thoughts known to Sonic Foundry - via the link provided above, via their user's BBS and via phone calls directly to them.
