not coaster MODERATOR
I've got a sizable collection that I've found in old Wurlitzers, Hammond organs, RCA radios and whatnot. In addition to all the RCA/Hammond/GE/Lindal and Sylvanias I've got some Telefunkin 12ax7 and 12au7's. Should I try 'em out in my tube combo or ???? What would you do with all these things? gtrmac
My guess is that the preamp tubes are pretty safe to try. You can put them in an amp and then just listen for hissing and crackling. Tapping on them will reveal loose components resuling in microphonic symptoms. The output tubes (if any) are riskier. A short could damage your amp's transformer. I would try to find someone with a tube checker before using any of these. Do you have any rarities? These could be worth testing. There were some output tubes used in old Gibson and Ampeg amps that are hard to find these days. Mac Bowne G-Clef Acoustics Ltd. not coaster MODERATOR
I just replaced the ????? stock pre tubes and replaced them with a "Thomas" 12AU7 in the first gain stage and a genuine Hammond 12AX7 in the second stage. What a beautiful tone upgrade! I may try switching the order and see if I get a more aggressive sound.
