Opinions on 5150 Combo wanted

Mats Olsson.

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at a used 5150 combo in mint condition, it would be used in a recording studio with many different guitar players.

Do you think it would be a worthwhile addition that could satisfy a lot of people?

Are 5150's reliable workhorses or are they in dire need of TLC all the time?

Anything to watch out for on a used 5150?

Any honest response is greatly appreciated!

If you must have a peavey go for the delta blues or classic 30.

You say ", it would be used in a recording studio with many different guitar players." Horrors! the 5150 will give ya VD... also,

while I'm at it... stay away from those "pointy" guitars and be

aware that any guitarist that puts his right hand up on the

fretboard is goin' straight to hell!

If you need an amp for the studio... ya can't go wrong with a

nice Fender tweed.

It's tricky to setup. If you pretend the clean channel is the only amp you have it's ok, but you have to turn the preamp up past about7 to get any bass response. It's not really user friendly, if you want a player to set it up who isn't used to it it's going to suck big time.

The distortion channel is ridiculously fizzy bright, even with the treble and presence turned all the way off....

Thank you guys for you prompt replies!

So, I guess the 5150 is out of the question then. Any other suggestions?

I have a Line 6 Spider combo that I could get rid of, what I need is a versatile & reliable bread & butter amp that could be good in a recording studio. Preferably a combo - but this is not a must.

Today it is like this: a lot of guitar players bring their own stuff or use either the Spider or any amp of their own + the studio's Mesa Boogie 212 (halfopen back). We've also got gtr & bass Pod's + an old Hughes & Kettner Tubeman.

I have also been offered a used Peavey tweed 410 openback loudspeaker at a resonably low cost. Whats your verdict on that one?

As always, speak out, be honest!

Peace.

Get the 4/10 cause its gonna sound diff. And see if you can get a older Fender Bassman head {black face} about $250 to $350..This will give you a great old type blues ,RnB and roots rock rig..Very good for a clean sound too!And it will get used by all types of players, even if they have there own rigs for a change of pace....Good luck

It's one louder than the 5149.......innit?

Nigel

Perhaps, but not half as loud as the 5151!

Now, what amps should I get ?

I have also been eyeing a cool Ampeg Jet-12.

Actually the 5150 II is a great amp. With some JJ/Tesla ECC83S in the preamp stage and JJ/Tesla 6L6GC in the output stage it really smoothes out the gain and all that buzz and the clean is very good.

If you want a great versatile amp (and I realize that you are looking at a combo) you must try the Triple XXX. It's simply all around awesome.

Just my $0.02.
