Hey

this isn't really a topic...just a question.. Ok i play piano jazz and everything and i know all the chords now is there any relation to the quitar?? Is it set up in a logical similar way as a keyboard, like the string and positions? I have no idea i am thinking of trying it. You could reply in this forum or you could just email me at bananaman787@aol.com. I only enter this forum once o twice a week so an email i'd get quicker :0)

thanks!

If you try to think of it like a piano it's probably going to be weird for you. Approach it like a beginner, get basic technique out of the way, then think of the guitar as either the left hand part or the right, but probably not both simultaneously. Or if you must, think of the bass/wound strings as the lower keys and the unwound keys as the higher keys. Learn all of your basic block chord voicings - it should be self-explanatory if you understand it on piano.

Yes, there IS a relation between guitar and keys... each fret is a half-step. In fact, when I teach people guitar, I begin by showing them how a keyboard is set-up. It's much easier for them to understand the concept of "half-steps" and "whole-steps" (as they realte to sharps and flats) on a keyboard. A beginner can easily visualize the blacks and whites... but a guitar neck just looks like wood.

Teaching keys to guitar students sounds crazy to a lot of people, but consider this: I know other teachers whose beginner guitar students have difficulty remembering "there is no B-sharp" when they are "counting" their way up the neck... my students have no problem because they know there's no black key between B and C. It also makes it a lot easier for them to understand "root-third-fifth-etc" when we start building chords.

Well... I'm sure that's more than you wanted to know. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif Sorry for not e-mailing you, but (as Rick pointed out) this is a FORUM. If you want e-mails, get a pen-pal!
