ON TOPIC: Power amps

Recommended Posts

What do you folks like? Anybody have any comments about Carvin? Is Crown the best? Who makes crappy power amps? What sort of advice would you give a person in their selection of a power amp? Would you buy a power amp used? Also, does anybody have any opinions on the present situation which exists between the US and Iraq?

PM series Carvins always seem prickly-bright. Macro/Micro Crowns seem a bit harsh, probably from a ridiculously high damping factor. Power series seemed blurry for monitoring. DC sound like old vintage hi-fi stuff. From what I've heard I think I want a Bryston if I could afford it. By the way, shut up.

Depends on what you are using it for. For studio monitoring I like Mcintosh. They are built like tanks and sound beautiful. for P.A. use i like either crown or QSC. The PM series CARVER pro amps have some issues with the power supply when teying to push subs. If I was building a P.A. I would use either a QSC PLX series or a K series Crown.

Reach out and grab a clue.

For FOH, I use QSC PLX 3402's, which I feel are an excellent buy for the money. For my monitor system, I use Peavey CS800S for no other reason than they are there and they're reliable. I DO very much like the Crown Macrotechs and probably would have 'em if they weren't so dang expensive. Rick

[/b][/quote]Explain how damping has anything to do with "harshness". There are too many variables that effect damping. The cable size/run, varying speaker imped w/frequency, etc. If you have harsh sound (whatever that is), it is because you have an amp with to great of output imped., and not enough back EMF to limit cone moevment. I have never heard any engineer complain about the damping of a Crown amp. I have heard Chris Pelonis and other studio system designers say that they are harsh on top. Damping is not a factor really at high frequencies. Some guys will use Crown on the low end and the a Chevin or a Manley on top. For live sound Crown MA5000's are standard, and will blow the crap out of any class H amp out there.

I have crest amps. they are expensive for what you get and they break all the time. I like the crown macrotech amps tho they are heavy and expensive. I use them for permanent installs. I love my QSC powerlite amps. They are under $1k, have a nice airy top (not bright or edgy, just airy) full mids and they even rum bridged at 4ohms for my subs just fine. I havent blown one up yet and they sound great. They also are very efficient so I blow fewer fuses in venues that dont know what kind of crappy ower they have. The lower end QSC amps are also good for the cash. If I were really strapped for $ I would find a used carver pm series which are tanks and sound great. Oh yeah, I seem to blow up mackie amps pretty easily too. Frost
