Hi Y'all

I've been reading with interest and a little depression about peeps sounding off ad infinitum about gear they have and how expensive it is and if it isn't an API or a Cranesong then it must be crap....hmmm!!

My question to you all is.... Surely it isn't what you have but the way that you use it or the way that you play it right? Are we loosing sight of talent and ability in favour of spending endless hours just talking about technology?

How do you feel? Do you care?

Well... gear does matter, sometimes. But yes, we are losing sight of talent and ability. There is a whole list of gear that I would never want to use because it just doesn't resonate with what I do. On the other hand there's a whole list of gear I WOULD use, or COULD use, or DO use, and not all of it is high dollar by a long shot.

The key is finding the gear - whether expensive or inexpensive or a combination of both - that WORKS for you. And trusting your ability to take care of the rest.

All of that said, I'd be nothing without my '52 Les Paul and my Ampeg. http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

If the technology being discussed is revolutionary or would really benefit me, then I'm very interested in discussing it. I don't think the minute differences in preamps is of much interest to the average musician, but something like CDRW's might be.

I'm a big believer in trying to use what you own to it's fullest capabilities. I still play a Roland RD250s digital piano even though more realistic digital pianos are on the market. The one I own has great character and that is more important than realism. Oops...I just got sidetracked talking about gear. Sorry about that Simon.

Steve and Lee are right on the money here(as usual). I try to use what I have to the best of my ability. I try to upgrade the weakest links(too many to list here) when I can afford it. And I must say I get an awful lot out of the discussions here, even if I will never own all the gear.

So I say , Chin up my friend, because it's all GOOD!!! http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/cwm/circle.gif

that you play it!!!

Yup...

I owned for years Yamaha FX 500 multi fx... I got pretty good stuff out of it (only thing is that it has those dropuots when you change presets http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/mad.gif )

After few years I've decided to let it go and to by myself new fx unit (boss GX 700 - great peace of gear). Then, one night I went to one concert and the guitarist just blew me away!!! He had that great sound coming from his JCM 900 and (yeah, you're right) Yamaha FX 500. Jesus...

First thing I got home was to plug in my old FX 500... I never got the sound that guy had (guitar was Fender Strat and JCM 900)...

I still have that FX 500 but I'm not gonna plug it in anymore...

(mostly because I fell like moron for not being able to make it sound right... http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

S-

No Doubt.

Amazing people with shitty tools still do good work. Marginal people with Amazing tools still sound shitty.

It all comes down to craftsmanship. How much time are you willing to spend on what you have - then maximizing the returns.

Proof is in the pudding and most talented people that I have met don't care what you are using unless they like what they hear. At the same time they don't criticize because they know that everyone has their own bag.

My thought is -- opinions are like assholes everyone's got one.

Anyway enough of the harsh stuff. WHATTSUUUUPPPP BOYYEEEE!!!

I think I posted this on another forum...it's a topic that's near and dear to my heart.

I've got enough equipment to really get me by. Sure, there are a few things I'd like to have. Most of you, if you knew what I had, would be aghast talking about me like I lived in a tarpaper shack by the tracks or something...but...

I figure that I could have a gold-plated Neve...all the latest apcray...and...it would be like giving a Les Paul and a Marshall to a catatonic person. I wouldn't have the foggiest notion as to how to make it sound like it oughta. I've heard some people, good musicians, with some "killer" setups that sound like shit because they're "recordingly challenged". Gear is friendly heroin. The more you get the more you want.

So...

I've made it my resolve to use my limited resources to the best of my ability...then take my sorry ass to someone that knows how to do what I need done and pay 'em for it. I don't exactly know how I classify myself. I play guitar but I'm not really a guitar player...not like the Hellecasters or anything. I sing but I'm not a singer...not like someone who really can sing. I write songs, but I'm not a songwriter...not like someone who really has the gift. So...where does that leave me? I'm a dabbler. And that goes for recording, too. I wouldn't buy a limo just to take it out for a weekend. I'd hire a chauffeur if I had the bug. Same thing with recording. I'll hire a studio who knows what they're doing.

Well, Tedster, You should do that.

I found (after few months) best way (for me) to use my multi FX unit...

If you paid the bucks for equipment, than you better know what to do with it and how it works. That's exactly what I told myself (nearly beat the shit out of me for not listening myself http://www.musicplayer.com/ubb/smile.gif )...

If it sounds god, just play the darn thing
