Can recording a bass guitar with a condenser Mic hurt it?

Recommended Posts

I recorded a 4X10 SWR bass cabinet with an AKG C3000B at a comfortable loud level in conjunction with a sans amp bass driver DI with great results. The mic was relitively close. I Eq'ed the amp for the tone and mid range, roling off the low end and letting the DI pick it up. Previously I had recorded many acoustic tracks with the AKG. Now no matter what I try, I cant get the acoustic tracks to sound the same. It has a nasal sound to it now. Could I have damaged the mic? Almost all the variables are the same.

It depends on what the meanings of the terms "relatively close" and "comfortable loud level" are to you. How close? How loud? IMO, chances are that you didn't hurt the mic unless you were REALLY blasting away and you also had the mic really close. If you did, you might hurt the mic. But if you're hearing differences and you are sure nothing else has changed in terms of your acoustic recording setup and methods, then obviously something is wrong with the mic. Take it to a good tech or send it to AKG for evaluation. Phil O'Keefe Sound Sanctuary Recording Riverside CA http://members.aol.com/ssanctuary/index.html pokeefe777@msn.com
