Mackie HR624 "pop" when powering on.

I was just wondering if anyone with these monitors gets a small "pop" when powering on with the front power switch. Also putting my ear next to the monitors with no input going in I hear slight hiss. Is this normal for quality audio monitors? Thanks for any input.

If I remember correctly, I think the HR824's do that, too. The HHB Circle 5's do it, I'm guessing that most powered monitors will do that on some level or another. Cheers! Spencer

My 824's have no pop...or hiss. What is your "power-on" sequence...do you have any faders up, when turning on equipment?

my 824's pop when powered up. one way around this is to use (auto on) or whatever its called. popwer is turned off when no signal is present. power turns on when signal is present. this way works very well, kinda like "sleep" on a macintosh. i have no idea if 624's do this or not

I have a similar problem with my 824s. They pop when I turn them off. One seems worse than the other though. I have tried to isolate them on different power circuits and everything but nothing seems to make a difference. I assume that this is just one of their quirks. I've had them for 5 years now and they are still kickin'.

Well...I just tried my 824s again (I usually run them in the On position at the back panel)...and no pop. I then tried them with the Auto-On position...no pop. I tried them with my mixer off...no pop. I tried them with the mixer on...no pop. I tried them with the mixer output level tuned up...still no pop. I just think it may be how you have your signal chain going...and the sequence of power-on for all your gear. Also...might have something to do with which input you are using on the monitors...and how your cables are wired...balanced/unbalanced...?

My power-on sequence is mixer (with monitor-outs muted), then monitors. I even tried unplugging the input cable from the 624s and still had the pop. It's a somewhat mild pop but it's still a pop. To answer the 624 sleep mode question; yes they do have it. I just unplug them when not in use though because I try to save on the utility bills (not a rich guy), otherwise they constantly suck up some small measure of juice as you can tell by touching the warm heatsinks when the units are off.

There must be some kind of republican conservative filters on yours Miroslav, :D because my HR824's pop also. The ones at home, and at work.

Mine were bought last Feb...I don't remember the exact date of manufacture...but they were fairly fresh off the assermbly line as I recall. Pretty much direct from Mackie - to Reseller - to me.

These monitors are supposed to have "tollerances better than Genelecs"(according to Mackie)so we should all have the same THX approved, whisper quiet, zero pop, no hum in the LF cut position HR824's ? I phoned tech-support and they advised me to turn down the "Sensitivity" of the HR824's to match the output level of my 1604VLZ . However, since the Sensitivity Level markings are there only as a rough guide, matching the sensitivity levels of the two monitors is tricky to say the least. I used tones and noise as well as a meter to do this, but, still, graduated pots with a series of nice "clicks" would have been the ticket. BTW, it did reduce the hiss a bit but it is still annoyingly......there. Before the HR824's I had a pair of YSM1's and a Hafler power amp and they were dead quiet. Funny, I don't recall Yorkville saying that they had "tollerances better than Genelecs"
