PBBPaul Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Last year I was asked to play at my son's annual Scout dinner. I agreed and sat quietly in a corner improvising some nice low-key Joe Pass inspired stuff for an hour or so. They've asked me to do it again this year and of course I said 'yes'. The catch is; they want to have a campfire theme and would like me to do some "campfire" songs with possible singalong stuff. I've been a blues/jazz/rock guy for the past 20 years or so and really don't have clue what to play. Any suggestions? Thanks, Paul Our new and improved website Today's sample tune: Lonesome One

Salty Tonk Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Think cowboy and kids. You might try some Roy Rogers "Happy Trails""Tumbling Tumbleweeds".And since you have kids I'm sure you've got some Disney videos around there.Pick up some funny Disney tunes."I wanna be like you" from "The Jungle Book"Since you play some jazz, this one would be fun for you and the kids alike."Hakuna Matata"from "The Lion King" is fun too.Just some thoughts. :D jgc2002 is not responsible for damages ,injuries and or death as result of above post.Side effects include nasuea, dizziness, dry mouth, vomiting, blurred vision, nervousness, loss of memory and in extreme cases sexual side effects. www.mp3.com/salt_creek

Tedster Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 Now just how would Joe Pass play "Kumbaya"? "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
GZsound Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 I have been sitting here trying to remember my old boy scout sit around the fire and sing experiences..since that was over 40 years ago all I can rember is tunes like "Red River Valley", "Home on the range" etc. The criteria is to do songs where everybody knows the chorus. She's anything but a bon-bon munching, soap-opera addict. She can't stand SO's :D My wife was a bit of a tom-boy as a kid, but her cousin was, not only a fruh-fruh, girly-girl, but an honest to goodness beauty pageant winner in high school. They were polar opposites. So my wife was looking forward to a girl who likes jeans and sweatshirts, overalls and such. Guess who's great love, now, is anything to do with Disney Princesses and dress up? (And before the peanut gallery chimes in, the answer is Lilly.) Yikes! She does like to play with frogs and fish (in our tank) so I'm holding out hope she'll like to camp. Maybe this is the year to buy a tent and sleeping bags. The thing I didn't get any part of when my dad retired and moved was camping gear. He had propane grills, sleeping bags, tents, even a mosquito netting tent to cover the eating area. I'm kinda glad I didn't take a tent. They were all 25+ years old. Nothing like the George Jetson style, drop it and it pops up perfectly tents available now! :D Ted, do you have any suggestions on a central location we could meet with the kids and play campfire songs together? Tedster Posted February 11, 2003 Posted February 11, 2003 Neil...I wouldn't mind coming to the Nashville area and checking out the campsites, to tell ya the truth. Just hand the Mister the remote control, a case of beer, the all-sports network.... and be sure to catch him after he's had a few cold ones, RIGHT DURING THE MIDDLE OF A BIG PLAY... pending touchdown,or etc., and then turn on the charm telling him how much you're wanting to spend on your shopping spree that will be merrily underway by half time. :D Men will agree to most anything given the right conditions. :D This is where a woman learns whether or not her hubby is REALLY paying attention. Dang!!! Why couldn't I have known this prior to divorce??? I could have done so much damage, rather than biting his bullets. How little we know before we learn the hard way. When I was a kid, my family used go camping a lot and one of our FAVORITE SONGS to get going was Row Your Boat. We'd start cycling the start times, and the whole group would join in at one part or another. Lot's of fun. You can take the man away from his music, but you can't take the music out of the man. Anifa Posted February 12, 2003 Posted February 12, 2003 By the way, for the record so none of ya'll think that I'm a superficial Barbie type after that post to Tedster; I'm not. I' twas raised a tomboy, so I've got that NATURE'S CHILD in me. I can't stand the couch potato man any more than a country boy can enjoy camping with a soap-aholic.... I don't even watch TV at all! If I were to go on a wild shopping spree, it have to be for MUSIC GEAR so I don't think I have any arguments from anyone on THIS forum; they'd be right there with me breaking it in. :D I actually LIKE going out into the wilderness and breathing in mother nature. How bout' going on a float trip; the best part of a campfire is the anticipation of being the first to rise with the sun and set the canoe in the mouth of the eddy to lead a long days journey. If you've got a John Boat, you'd be safe to toss an acoustic in to play along the way (if you're brave enough to chance the water; I wouldn't trust a guitar in a canoe though.) The widely publicized areas in the Ozarks such as "The Lake of the Ozarks," "Tantara," and other resorts like that are NOTHING compared to the beauty that you can find futher up in elevation. I was down there the summer before last, and what they are doing just prior to reaching Branson is completely awesome. It's become every bit as inviting to drive through as "The Bad Lands" (SD) or other places like that. Some of the prettiest country I've seen in Missouri. I didn't have a camera with me at the time, or I surely would have loaded up on pictures. I've been invited to go back again in August; and the host is a fun and crazy musician with LOTS of water toys; a high powered speed boat, jet skies, innertubes, and etc. No camping for a SPOILED BRAT though... he's accustomed to a life of POSH; a big reason for me KEEPING IT AS FRIENDS! This year I ask for permission to bring a male friend who is also a musician, if things worked out and the timing is right, and he opened the invite up to include a special friend. :thu: Had he said no, then I would have declined the invitation immediately; who says males and females can't be good friends?
