guittarzzan Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 I've read comments from users of both, but have yet to find someone who has both or has demoed both and can give some comparisons. I am curious if the Lawson is just as sweet of a mic as the Soundelux, but for much less; or if it is a step down from the e47. Anyone out there had first hand experience with both mics and your thoughts on them for male vocals. Thank you, Steve
Frost Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 I have used a lot of U47's and some sounddelux E47's and I own a pair of Lawsons so I guess Im up to bat. I dont think the Lawson and a U47 sound very much the same to my ear. The lawson has a brighter top and a little less thickness in the mids. It cuts better in a mix but is still pretty sounding. I find my lawsons to be my first pick for most applications tho. I love them on lots of vocalists, acoustic guitar, drum overheads, electric jazz guitar, and just yesterday banjo. The U47 and very similar E47 are more buttery and thick (not to say the lawson is by any means thin). Sometimes too much so for every song or singer. When they are right they are so right, if used too often, mixes tend to get muddy. Hope this helps. Frost
Meriphew_dup1 Posted February 8, 2003 Posted February 8, 2003 I've heard that the Lawson sounds like a U47 and the E47 sounds like a good U47. www.meriphew.com
Philip OKeefe Posted February 10, 2003 Posted February 10, 2003 Have only heard the E47 at a trade show, but I have heard the Lawson. The Lawson, to my ears, really doesn't "sound" all that close to identical to a good Neumann U47, but nevertheless, it is a very nice sounding mic. If I was going for the sound of a "real" '47, I'd either bite the bullet and pay the bucks for a good used one, or get the Soundelux. Actually, scratch that - I'd just get the Soundelux. The reason I've never purchased a vintage '47 has nothing to do with not liking the way they sound, but because of the scarcity of the original VF14 tubes (up to $2K for those, IF you can find one, and the Nuvistor mod SUX). IMO, David Bock is designing some of the finest mics currently available, and I give him / them a big thumbs up! :thu: But again, the Lawson is a premium quality mic, with a great "sound" - I just wouldn't say they "nailed" the old '47 tone.
guittarzzan Posted February 10, 2003 Author Posted February 10, 2003 Thanks Frost. That's some useful info. Steve
