Rim
Start with an ICANN-Accredited Registrars. You can find a list of them here Make sure that you own the domain name when you register it. There are usually three "contacts" associated with a domain name: Administrative, Billing and Technical. A quick way to make sure you own the domain name is to be one of those contacts - doesn't really matter which. But to be sure, you should just flat out and ask. The "list" price of registering a domain name is $35/year and it's not uncommon to require a minimum 2 year registration. Apparently, some companies can provide it cheaper. If it's too cheap or free, I'd be wary of who really owns the domain name. Some web hosting will register for you but be sure you own it meaning (among other things), you can take your domain name to another web hosting company. aka riffing Double Post music: Strip Down http://rimspeed.com http://loadedtheband.com
Charlie-brm
I just went through this last week with two of my domains. I'm looking at the paperwork from Network Solutions right now. There is a Registrant - the legal owner of record The Administrative Contact - for billing and notices Technical Contact - You want to be at least the first two. We had a provider take care of transferring our hosting and they put themselves down as the registrants and they've since gone out of business - big hassle. In the other case we assumed a going concern from someone else and they are still listed as the registrant. They have to approve my request to have the information updated. If you're more interested in running a business than figuring this out, get a web professional with a track record and whom you trust to set up your site, provider and domain name to your instructions. It's OK to tempt fate. Just don't drop your drawers and moon her.
Lee Flier
George, the best bet is to choose a web hosting service and have them handle the registration. They usually can get some kind of price break for you on registration. But, as Rim pointed out, be sure you will actually own the domain name! If you check out the "When was the last time you posted an MP3" thread, I listed a couple of good cheap hosting services there.
