flyscots Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Now would this happen in America? Two girls, performing under the name "TATU" have gone straight to the top of the singles charts with the song "All The Things She Says" First of all, I am saying nothing against lesbians nor am I promoting them, just thought it would be interesting to see what your thoughts are. These girls are causing quite a stir here in the UK. The song, quite a good song I might add, more dynamic than most pop songs, is about the struggles the girls come accross in their relationship - including falling out with each other and telling their parents. However, seeing as the general public dont actually listen to the song the controversy sprung up when they saw the video. In the video, the girls, who are aged 16 and 17, are dressed in school uniforms with mini skirts. They are behind some sort of cage with lots of people staring at them like they are freaks - which fits nicely with the song. It is pouring down with rain and the girls are getting soaked. The proceed to touch each other all over and kiss a fair few times. One celebrity couple accused the managers of Tatu of "promoting paedophilia" Others in the press worry that this will encourage pre-teen girls to go around kissing each other. Once again I think the media has over-reacted but I half suspect this video would struggle to get shown in the States and the song would struggle to succeed because of the subject matter - am I right? Ahhh, the crazy world of music! John Scotsman
whitefang Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 You are right! Just channel-surf here in the states, and you won't have to go far to see TV shows with mutated looking space aliens, horribly difigured features, pro-war shows, gunfights, witchcraft, boxing, wrestling, car chases and home videos of people doing dumb shit that injures them for our entertainment. Yet, a story on page one of todays paper dealt with the amount of concern some folks are having with the amount of content of a sexual nature is showing up on the tube. Go figure... Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
Gus Lozada Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 I actually enjoy the music. Nice Synths works. Terrific one, by the way. Yummi... Teen Lesbians on Video... Actually the "kissing" is pathetic and false. They don't even open their mouths :D ... but the skirts... real ! err... what was I saying? Oh yes, the music. I like the production of the vide... err... CD. A good surprise from Russia. whitefang Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 WWII tanks built by the Russians were superior to any built by the U.S. or Germany. In the beginning, they constantly beat our ass in the space race. The MIG fighter is STILL superior to any other conventional jet fighter built by any other country. Their VODKA is the best ever made(you can dump that Absolut pony-piss in the toilet, as far as I'm concerned). Why, then, would good music or videos from Russia be any surprise? Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
trick fall Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 I've noticed lately that the news has been getting gorier and gorier and violence on tv never seems to be a problem, but god forbid they show anything too racy.
BrianT Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003
Originally posted by whitefang: The MIG fighter is STILL superior to any other conventional jet fighter built by any other country. ? Whitefang
I'll spot you the rest of it, but the MIG part is off. The F-15 (air to air combat kill ratio is over 100:0) is arguably superior to anything the Soviets made. But even if you want to argue that one, the F-22 Raptor is out of control great. The only plane ever built that can supercruise, that is, fly at supersonic speeds at military power settings, without afterburner. Add stealth, superior manueverability, higher operating ceiling, higher top speed, much greater range, etc and it's all over. I mean, keep in mind that no other airplane has yet managed to shoot down an F15 Eagle, and that design dates to the '70s. The F22 would waste the F15. OK, so I'm a terminal gearhead. Can't help it.
I do believe that the F-14 (I'm not sure which revision, but the most recent one anyway) can do that as well. Perhaps even the F/A-18 Super Hornet. And what about the JSF? Or is that the same as the F-22. Can ya' tell I was in the Navy? "Bass isn't just for breakfast anymore..." http://www.mp3.com/Addix_Metzatricity

Yep, one of my favorite producers produced a duo of Russian teenage lesbians... Seriously though... they ARE NOT lesbians. It's just an image created for them by their "smart" manager(s). They got famous in Russia two or three years ago already. Back then I read an interview with their (Russian) manager (russians tend to name managers as producers, btw) and he told the press that actually these two girls are just... normal girls whose image was created artificially. Now they (Tatu) just repeat that formula (which brought them huge success in Russia a few years ago) for western audience, and it seems like it pays off again. BTW, their original album in Russian sounds... much less impressive than the one made by Mr. Horn, I must say. I am back.

Their image makers had quite a hard time to make them look like teens (again) in that video. :D I am back.
Joachim P. Dyndale Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Gulliver: Yeah, I hear that too... I believe the single was produced by Trevor Horn in England, and the rest of the album by someone else in Russia. I almost bought the album because I like the production done by mr. Horn and I like the song, but a few friends of mine recommended that I save the money for something else as the Russian-made part of the album supposedly really sucks. And as a rule (well, almost anyway) I don't buy singles. So... I don't have it at the moment on my hands though, but I remember that it contained two songs sung in Russian and the vocals were put on the same backing tracks as their English "twins". The earlier, Russian (original) version of that album is available... in Russia only, I guess. Anyway, not all of the songs on an album (even if it's produced by someone like Trevor Horn) are equal. ;) I am back.

Whitefang
Thanks Whitefang - this was exactly my point. I noticed the silly censorship on TV when I was in the States. A woman's nipple is blacked out at 2am yet an animal is shot dead for all to see, gore included, at 5pm. Yeah right, its all Marilyn Manson's fault.
Originally posted by Gulliver: Seriously though... they ARE NOT lesbians. I'm looking forward to hearing their next release, although apparently the video has already been banned in the UK! John Scotsman
mix2much Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 I live in the states and I have seen that video a few times...often in the middle of the day. I like the song and it's doing extremely well in radio as well. Glenn Halldorson Premiere Radio Networks
BrianT Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 So two twenty-somethings posing as intertwined teenage lesbians in front of a great Trevor Horn track (the only thing he did on an otherwise POS album) is what we're dealing with here, right? What a bunch of apes we are. Ring bell, humans salivate. This is nothing but a gimmick to sell records, and if it was any other gimmick, the forum would be lit up with flames for it. But make it a couple of girls dressed up to look underage and it's all good? I guess Milli Vannilli should have tried to look younger and kiss each other. Might have worked out better for them. Regards, Brian T
Sylver Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Anyone who gets international attention these days has some shock-value hook. Offending as many people as possible is about the only way to be heard above the noise. I think it may be all Elvis's fault. I really don't know what to put here.

whitefang Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 1. My comments about the MIG were based on what I've read and heard from people I feel know better than me. Current fighter pilots and such. Any corrections any of you wish to point my way can't be argued from here. So I'll digress. 2. My kids tried slipping cuss words into their speech when they were pre-teens, for shock value. When the shock wasn't displayed, and the sought after attention wasn't forthcoming, they gave it up. Didn't take long, either. Make of that what you will. 3. It's no well kept secret that for all the enlightenment this country tries to claim, America is STILL outlandishly prudish. Look at how the "Want to make out?" line was kaiboshed from the Miller beer commercial. Even in the new version of "Miracle On 34th Street" the leading man's name was changed from Gaily to Bedford. Me? I've always preferred raising my kids myself. Not letting some tight-assed do-gooder try to for me. And, in that vein, I've already raised MY kids. I'm NOT going to raise yours as well. So don't insist I set any examples for them! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
lwilliam Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Last year, I saw a man being fried (VERY dead) by grabbing onto a high-voltage wire on the 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 and 11:00 news. THAT was revolting! How many times did we see the 9/11 footage? The prime time news is whats disgusting and ought to have an NC-17 rating with parental blocking! So two gals are kissing in miniskirts???????? Huh? ...and THIS bothers someone? Larry W.

I'm bothered by the fact that I'll never be a teenage lesbian, no matter how hard I try, and therefore have less potential to sell albums. :) - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon
michael saulnier Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 We can't let those dang'd Russky's get ahead of us in the "teenage lesbian pop band" race. It's too vital to our economic future. I demand a CRASH program. We've got to develop our OWN teenage lesbian pop stars and kick those russky butts... It'd be UNAMERICAN not to. :freak: guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! Jeebus Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Hey, the Jeebus loves a good rack as much as the next guy. I also have no problem with two 18 year old lesbians showing public affection. In fact, I would clearly enjoy it. However, I am completely offended and sickened that the music industry has come to a point where this latest gimmick has been used with such success as to top the UK singles charts. :(

deanmass Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 Discover just had somethign on the new joint strike fighter competition, and the F-35 was the winner. Mail Call had a question about which fighter was the fastest. He said it was the SU-37 (?) russian fighter. My impression of jets is that ours are better built and more comfortable, but the russians have some great hardware without the creature comforts or overwhelming tech stuff. Now, let's get back to the lesbos... :)

And, hmmm, doesn't Kim Il Jong have a kind of Elvis hair-style, too? Suddenly, the world is making sense again. :D rt
mix2much Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 The video got people talking. I think that's the point. The song itself is good for what it is....in fact a lot better than most of what is out there at the moment. I think the song can stand on it's own even without a make-out lesbian video....although that hasn't hurt appearantly. Glenn Halldorson Premiere Radio Networks

But by year 1943 (or 1944) Russians started to make legendary T-34 which happened to be quite good by the standards back then. Anyway... I agree. Let's get back to "our" young & cute lesbians! :D I am back.
AlanThomas Posted February 7, 2003 Posted February 7, 2003 I think this is another example of how popular music has basically become "soft porn". Regardless of whether the music is shit or good, nobody gets anywhere in popular music anymore without showing a little leg or tit. Would this record have had the success that it's had without the teen-lesbo kissy face and the wet t-shirt contest type titillation? Signatures can appear at the bottom of your posts.
