Groovepusher Sly Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 PT 6 Will iLok End Plug Piracy? Will the iLok keep people from pirating ProTools 6.0 plug ins? Or will it be a big hassle and piss a lot of folks off? What do you PT users think? If you have more than one machine running at the same time, I guess you will need an iLok for each one. not Cereal Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 doesnt affect me. i refuse to goto pt6 and osx until pt5.x and os9.x are no longer useful. hey, if it works, dont put yourself in upgrade hell. for the first time ever, i feel no need to upgrade my setup. it just works great the way it is.
Jeebus Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Digidesign can suck The Jeebus's member. Why should The Jeebus be forced to buy Digi hardware when all he wants is the software? No thank you.
not Cereal Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 uh, huh huh, huh, uh huh he said DONG huh huh uh huhhuh
Kaptain Karl Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 The best part is that Digi doesn't give you an ilok with the purchase of the digi hardware/software. You have to buy the ilok seperately. LAME. It will have an impact on piracy but I'm sure someone desperate and broke will find a way. Groovepusher Sly Posted February 6, 2003 Author Posted February 6, 2003 You do get one with new systems. Alndln Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003
Originally posted by Groovepusher Sly: PT 6 Will iLok End Plug Piracy?
Depends on wether people use pirated plugs because of the hassle or wether they just don't wan't to pay, because I-Lok was cracked within a week on the Logic/PC side. For me personnally,I refuse to instantiate USB or any other high bandwidth stealing technology. G. Ratte Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 Does it have a pass-through? That'd be a drag to lose a USB port to that thing. G. Ratte' http://www.cultdeadcow.com
Joachim P. Dyndale Posted February 6, 2003 Posted February 6, 2003 For those of you who don't know this: The ONLY way to stop software piracy is to stop making software. Simple as that. There are probably some ways to make it pretty time-consuming for a cracker to do his "job", but eventually he'll succeed. This is not to start another thread where we go all the way in fighting for our opinions on software piracy, but: IMO the only thing really hurting the software industry is when people use pirated software commercially, or just use it in cases where the software isn't designed directly to enable you to make money off of it (Like Windows, misc. system utilities, games etc.). The average teenager downloading a cracked copy of Cubase SX so that he/she can start learning the software and learning music production is, IMO, not hurting Steinberg. In most cases I believe that if this teenager starts doing commercial projects with Cubase he/she'll buy it. In this case, I think the piracy would actually have served as free advertising for Steinberg. There is a possibility that I'm terribly naive here, but I hope that's not the case. As I said, this wasn't meant to be the start of a discussion about the ethics (or lack thereof) of software piracy. But what you do with this thread is up to you... ;) -Joachim Dyndale -------------------- Einstein: The difference between genius and stupidity is: Genius has limits My Blog...

I don't think the iLok would use any bandwidth. But part of my question is, will it be a hassle. I guess it's no worse than having a car key, or having to set your home alarm. Those things just become part of your routine. I guess, if the iLok is transparent and unobtrusive, I would probably stick it in a USB hub and forget about it. Comments? Plus, cracked software can cause problems or not run on different operating systems. www.myspace.com/thefunkfather
