URGENT REQUEST FOR GT3 MIXING PROJECT PARTICIPANTS!

Hi everybody -- I am writing a book called "Mixing and Mastering with Cubase SX/SL." There will be an accompanying CD, and I thought it would be very cool to include some of the remixes of George's tune, along with George's mix, to illustrate how much a tune can differ depending on who's mixing it. I will also include some of George's tracks in their original form, then after I processed them, to illustrate the difference. George has already given permission. So here's my question - would any of you be willing to have your mixes included on the CD? If so, I would need an email with the following: 1. Permission to use your mix on the CD, with the understanding that you will receive no compensation. 2. Any information you want included about yourself -- a brief bio, personal web sites, discography, whatever. Since there's nothing in the budget to pay you, I figure the least I can do is give you publicity on a world-wide basis :) 3. Contact information (email and if possible, phone number) in case I have any questions. This needs to be your personal email, it would be too cumbersome to do this all through PMs. Anyone willing to help out? Thanks in advance!!!

Great idea! Just a suggestion: why don't you PM those participants you want to include in your CD? I'd be willing to offer mine, but honestly, I don't want to go through all the trouble of writing all the info I'd want to send you, if you don't want to use my mix any way. :)

I think that Graig really likes all the mixes, from what I've gathered. Each one really has it's own thing, and all of them would probably suit his project... I'm speculating ;)
Originally posted by loudist: I don't think any of mine would qualify as they were total 'ground up' remixes.
They were very cool and creative... I wish I could have heard the "funk" mix! I especially like what you did in the "at home in the street" part on the rockabilly mix, where you go into more of a rave up. And the way you edited the guitar solo really brought it together over that feel. I think that's something that alot of drastic remixes that I've heard can fail on.

My post was kinda whiny wasn't it. Sorry. I just started thinking about all my personal web sites that are still under construction, writing a "music" bio since I've never had one, and all this other stuff. But I'm whining again. Craig, if you want to use my mix, I would be honored. You can just credit "Rim" and point to www.rimspeed.com Thanks.

Hey Craig, when will the CubaseSX book be out? Also are you aware of any other power users book for Cubase SX?

You can use mine, if you want. BTW, I just had one of my own songs mastered by a guy here in town, and it sounded much better than my mastering job. If anybody wants his info, let me know.

<> Hey first of all thanks for the great response!! This will make the book much cooler. You don't have to have used Cubase, the idea behind the book is more about mixing and mastering, with Cubase as the "platform." If it goes over well I'll adapt the book to Sonar as well. I'm planning on using the MP3s because the idea is to show how mixing can turn a tune into entirely different things, it's not a fidelity contest. However, George gave permission for me to excerpt some of his tracks and give examples of before and after processing and such, so there will be of those as well. I haven't decided which mixes or how many I will use yet, I'm still downloading them (dial up sux). It would be cool to include them all, I figure it would be about 100 MB of space which still leaves me plenty for other things. But I also think this has been such a cool project that including all these mixes sends a good message about collaboration and learning, and the advantages of not working in a vacuum but getting input from others. So thanks again, everyone! Deadline for the book is the end of the month (ouch) so i'll be sorting out the cuts soon.

Craig - you need to tell them to get their webpage together, I've been trying to download the demo for SX for days now and get: /download/pc/Cubase_SX/Demo_SX_102/setup_cubase_sx_102_demo.exe was not found on this server. .... Not that it's that easy to find in the first place - if you didn't know what Steinberg was to begin with, it would be impossible to figure out their big products were Nuendo and Cubase based on how obfuscated their websites(s) is/are. While I'm here... can anyone explain what the difference is between SX and SL? Do they have the same mix engine? Do you still have to open a "project" directory (ala Cubase) and jump through hoops before you can start recording? Can you do vector editing superimposed over the wave, ala CoolEdit? Can you reassign the mouse to reposition the transport by clicking a location on the mix screen, again like Cool Edit? (I think Nuendo is like Cubase, you have to click up top on a bar of some sort?) Can you change the clunky "click once to highlight before you can drag a wav" bs? Again, CoolEdit you just grab it and pull the wave where you want it...

a friend of mine has PT LE as well as Cubase SX. He loves SX and finds the user interface far more superior than than of PT's. And he knows PT's really well. He's actually going to remaster my GT3 mix. He did a remaster of one of my songs, and his mastering was much better than mine.

Thanks so much everyone, I didn't expect to get such a huge response. Here's an update... A lot of you have asked if your mix will be used. I won't know this until the very last minute, because of the question of how much space will be left on the CD after I've included all the audio examples designed to support the book. My *hope* is to include all the mixes from people who volunteered them, in MP3 format (the object is to show different mixing approachs, not sound quality). If that's not possible, priority will be given to mixes that used the original tracks as much as possible. The deadline for the book is March 4th and I will email those whose mixes will appear before then, but probably not much before -- I'm really slammed right now. BTW regarding the post wondering about the difference between SX and SL -- there's a document on the Steinberg.net site (if you can find it ) that delineates the differences. Biggest differences to me are no expanded view on the mixer, and only 5 insert effects slots instead of 8. But there are some other differences as well.
