Raymar Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 With all the possibilities there are how could anybody ever have writer's block? You shouldn't chase after the past or pin your hopes on the future.

JDL Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 I heard somewhere that writer's block isn't that you can't think of anything, its just that the stuff you make up, you think it all sucks. JDL on Purevolume Bird\'s Eye View on Purevolume

It can strike in the middle of something you already started. Most full time writers write down whatever they think of, whether it sucks or not. They may have a `sucks files` for the crappy stuff. writer`s block is drawing-or writing, more exactly-a blank. It is a mental cul-de-sac, it`s being inside a bubble and needing a quiet corner. The weird thing is, it most often goes away for no reason-just like it happens.

ernest828 Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 Writers Block This is a paralyizing place to be as a songwriter. To get out of this place I blatantly write a song in the style of someone I honor as a songwriter. This does two things: 1.)It gets you to write something. I hate when you read in a songwriting book, "...just write something, anything!" This is truly horrible advice but when you are trying to write like someone you respect, it gives you an aim, a goal. You know how the song should sound because you are trying to make it sound like someone else so you stop juding your stuff because you are deliberately trying to sound like someone else. 2.) It helps you to learn what you like about that song because if you are sort of copying it you have to tear it apart and study it. Once you figure out what you like about the song the strenghtens you as a songwriter because you can now listen to your other material and see it for what it is. Namaste, Ernest
henryrobinett Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 I think "Write anything" is just about the best advice there is. Creativity or the "muse" comes from just KNOWING. I think the problem with "writers block" comes from a sudden disbelief in ones ability which probably comes from over analysing and trying to THINK up something creative. If you can get to that fine line of not sitting in judgement over every little thing you do it'll come back. One already KNOWS what's good. Just write. There are no scarcity of songs or ideas. Not every song or idea I come up with has to be brilliant. But if I THINK it has to be brilliant I've already begun setting up road blocks. I'd rather write 12 totally crappy songs than nothnig at all. But I find when I do do this most of the things I write are pretty good. The wheel is well greased. I come up with an idea and put it down. I need a bridge and pull it down. Chorus? I pull it out of the air. After it is basically written I can now judge it. Now I can make little changes or major changes as needed. But I desperately try to stand out of my own way. All the best, Henry Robinett

Gtoledo3 Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 If I come up with a concept- lyrically, melodically, harmonically- whatever... and then just sit back and think about what I want the song to be like, it's pretty much done. Then I break out some paper and kind of write an abbreviated lead sheet for it. For me the key is to not censor my thoughts during the initial writing stages... to come up with numerous verses, alternate lines, different bridges, intro's etc. Then, once I have the "raw material" it's time to go in and carve the junk away. If I go back and forth worrying about whether an idea is good or not before I write it down, it leads to "writer's block" for me. Writer's block also used to happen to me, b/c I would stall on deciding what kind of song/concept I want to work on. Now I just sit down and list possible titles/chorus concepts. I almost always come up with the chorus/hook line first.. the rest of the song falls into place for me if I come up with the chorus first. Want mix/tracking feedback? Sylver Posted February 4, 2003 Posted February 4, 2003 When I get writers block, the best thing I do to get out of it is to learn something new. I really don't know what to put here.
Dan South Posted February 5, 2003 Posted February 5, 2003 I...can't...think of anything...to...write... ...but this is a good thread, so I'm bumping it. :D Think of writing and editing as two separate acts that you have to do at different times. When you write, just write. Don't try to make it perfect. Trust yourself, and give yourself some slack. Above all, have FUN. Fun is the best cure for an impass (unless you have one of those enemas handy). The Black Knight always triumphs!
