sign Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 No, no, no, not George junior, who's a not so very smart guy. Let's talk about Kate, who's a genius. Chip (and all), I know you are a big admirer of this beautiful woman and great musician/composer. There's a nice interview with her in the februari issue of Mojo magazine. Buy it! You also can see and hear her on: http://www.white-man-killer.com/kate/the_muse.html Hey, and Chip, have you been able to whatch that video already? Super 8 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Well, I'm not Chip -you can ask him, and he will tell you so... But what a nice break away from Bush the President, to talk about something even nicer -Bush the Kate! I just downloaded some MP3's taken from her first US performance on Saturday Night Live -which I happended to see back in 79. I don't think the audience was sure what to make of her and her creative dance. She was great though. I haven't kept up on her in recent years, however. Anything spectaular happening? What's her best album? Has she released her best work yet? Super 8 Hear my stuff here
Jotown Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Her duet with Peter Gabriel, "Don't Give Up" is one of my all time favorite songs. I recentley saw the SNL performance and I must say it was very odd. She is eclectic and talented artist. I'm not sure what she has done lately. Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"
Super 8 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Yeah, "Don't Give Up" is a GREAT song. Nice message too. It's given me a lift when I've needed one (music is such a gift!). This is OT, but have you heard the Gabriel Secret World Live performance of that song, with Paula Cole singing Kate's part? I LOVE that version. Paula's voice is nowhere as distictive as Kate's -but then, look who we're comparing her too.?.?. Still, she does a great job singing it HER way, and very soulfully. Love it! And Levin's little bass riff at the end accented by Manu's drumming gives the song such an unexpected turn! It's sooo -them! Super 8 Hear my stuff here

Oh, and Steve RB.....you can do better than that  The alchemy of the masters moving molecules of air, we capture by moving particles of iron, so that the poetry of the ancients will echo into the future.
GZsound Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Bush? What about Sam Bush? Mark G. BrianT Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Yup. "Hounds of Love" is a great album, IMO. Totally cool melodies and her voice just works. Regards, Brian T
D_dup3 Posted February 1, 2003 Posted February 1, 2003 Reportedly she's working on a new release (see current MOJO magazine feature)...but has been doing so for several years.
Dan South Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 I'm not a big Kate Bush fan, but I'll gladly discuss the "Everything Zen," "Little Things That Kill," "Machine Head" Bush. Have they released anything that's up to par with the first album? The Black Knight always triumphs!

Talked to a guy I teach that works at a local tv station, at first he didn't even know what I was talking about... but no luck. It's probably something that one won't find in the States I'm afraid. But thanks again, I'm still hanging on to it... thanks I don't suppose the Mojo article says anything about her current plans to do anything musical? It's sad to know someone so talented has seemingly apparently decided to just sort of call it a day, when one knows there's more left in her. Hmph, some producer should coral all of the Neu-Estrogen Brigade to make a KB tribute or some such and try to bring her out of the wood work... Thanks again for the tape... sign Posted February 2, 2003 Author Posted February 2, 2003 Chip, in Europe we have VCR's like my Sony SLV-E7 that can playback both PAL and NTSC 4.43. I don't think it can record in NTSC mode. There must be a VCR in the US that can playback PAL I suppose, anybody who knows? Maybe in the near future I will be able to copy the tape to a DVD. I will send you a copy then. On the other hand I know a guy who is a big shot in TV land, I'll ask him about it. About the Mojo special about Kate: it's a "must have" Chip! 7 pages full of great info. What about this: when she was invited to sing and play "The man with the child in his eyes" (with a 30 piece orchestra in Air studio's), a song she had written at 13. Live with the full orchestra, she nailed it at once. Stuart Elliot says: "Kate was very welcoming, she treats everyone so well. I've never had anything but good vibes from her. If she's having a bad day you will be the last to know about it. She comes into the studio and smiles and it's all bright, airy and sunshine. She really cares about people". Hey Chip and all, do yourself a big favour and get Mojo, you won't regret it. Kate Bush is such an extraordinairy talented and inspiring artist. The most loved and and less loved perhaps, but far beyond most others. The article says something about Kate giving herself totally: when she sings she is "naked with her clothes on". Peace, Han The alchemy of the masters moving molecules of air, we capture by moving particles of iron, so that the poetry of the ancients will echo into the future.
Tusker Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 I have her The Line the Cross and the Curve video from 1993. I intuited from the video that she was slowing down. Maybe going through the motions, less passionate than in the past, etc. I recall being stunned by "Wuthering Heights" when it came out. The otherworldy voice, the tremendous passion and the rich songcraft. Our society makes maturing hard on musicians, but particularly women musicians methinks. Jerry
Salyphus Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Is it true that she was 'discovered' by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd?
D_dup3 Posted February 2, 2003 Posted February 2, 2003 Actually th MOJO magazine piece is more an overview of her career than an interview, althought the author did speak to her somewhat recently. As for her plans, as mentioned above, she's working on a new recording...but has been for several years. At the risk of speculating, she seems quite "eccentric" & may have some personal issues---as many artists do*---that prevent her from thinking her work is ever "finished". For example, she has a history of repeatedly re-cutting vocals, etc., that keeps the work in eternal limbo (this went on, apparently, with her earlier releases, as well) & graduallly wears down the spirit of the musicians that work with her (& possibly the vitality of the music itself). There may always be room for improvement but sometimes too much is enough already! Best to read it yourself. [*see Brian Wilson, Hendrix, Lowell George, etc.]
sign Posted February 3, 2003 Author Posted February 3, 2003
Originally posted by Sal ©: Is it true that she was 'discovered' by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd?
Right! A family friend called Ricky Hopper taped some of her songs in 1973 and passed them to a friend who happened to be David Gilmour. I think I have a couple of these recordings on a cassette. What you hear is a recording from a portable radio/cassetterecorder on a chair next to the piano and a very young girl singing songs that seem to be made by an adult person. Very nice and complicated songs. David Gilmour says: "Kate couldn't be ignored, she was obviously to me, a great talent. It would have been criminal to have ignored her". Chip McDonald Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003
Originally posted by sign: There must be a VCR in the US that can playback PAL I suppose, anybody who knows?
I dunno, I would guess not... I would think the dual-mode capability is probably to help distribution in border regions in Europe, a situation not here... Maybe in the near future I will be able to copy the tape to a DVD. I will send you a copy then. That would be VERY cool! I suppose common DVD creation is rapidly approaching, eh? Curiously, my el-cheapo Apex DVD player has a button for PAL out. Unfortunately not *through*... Hey Chip and all, do yourself a big favour and get Mojo, you won't regret it. Kate Bush is such I'll have to make a point to pick it up.. things have become more and more compressed lately. something about Kate giving herself totally: when she sings she is "naked with her clothes on".[/QB] Yeah, it's curious where her apparent willingness from day 1 to emote so fully came from. That's what makes her so great, and at the same time probably a little too much for some people at first - she's willing to stretch her voice into the most insane sound and *use* it. Sort of like the Hendrix of vocalization... Guitar Lessons in Augusta Georgia: www.chipmcdonald.com Eccentric blog: https://chipmcdonaldblog.blogspot.com/ / "big ass windbag" - Bruce Swedien
D_dup3 Posted February 3, 2003 Posted February 3, 2003 After reviewing the MOJO article I realized it does not have any recent interview material from KB herself, though all musicians & producers who worked with her were interviewed for the piece.
