My dial up provider is Bell South. I normally get a great connection up untill about 6 weeks before Christmas. Then I suspect they turn up the "Suck Knob" untill the 1st of Feb. in an effort to sell more DSL service ?????? Looks like my great connection is mysteriously back for no other reason !@#$%^& Just my theory, but wondering if anyone knows for sure ???? Russ http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-russragsdale

Interesting, Russ. What part of the city/suburbs are you in? I don't use Bell South for internet access. My wife works for Ford Credit. Back when the economy was still riding high, Ford decided their employees needed to have home computers and internet access. They partnered with PeoplePC. My connection hasn't changed much in the two years we've used it. Typical speed is 44kbps, although lately I seem to get either 42.7k and 45.3k a lot. Seldom does it connect faster than that, but I have seen 48k and 49.6k. What's typical for your Bell South connection?

I avereage around 42 with an absolutely free service(Met Connect)that comes with no software, just a dialer.I can stay on for as long as I like as well,so 42 is bearable.

A change in dialup connectivity could be any number of things, from phone line noise, to interference, to all the `hidden' settings on your computer. Especially if it is a windows machine. It alters its settings at regular intervals.

Howdy Fantastic, I'm in Hermitage and have a 46+ conection right now. Usually it will be about 48, but during the Holiday season it will drop to 24, 28. Not enough horsepower to navigate very well on this forum  Even slow speeds at times when would'd think you'd be the only one on the net ???? I just REALLY suspect BellSouth trying to sell more DSL service ???? Hey we ought to get together sometime. Drop me an e-mail. Russ http://home.bellsouth.net/p/PWP-russragsdale

Hey, Fantastic! MY wife works for General Motors, and they struck a deal with AOL to let us have it at $3.00 a month. Otherwise, I'd probably be with NetZero or something. But AOL is WORTH three bucks! Almost... But lately, I've had connection troubles, too. Takes three tries sometimes to get connected. Somewhere else in this forum, people have mentioned these types of troubles linked to the worm virus. May be. Funny thing is, though, with each try the connection speed increases. So, depending on when I connect, I'm not really sure WHAT speed I'm running at! Whitefang
I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Very cool, Whitefang. My brother was a ground floor AOL user back in 1990 or '91. When they changed their business model, "Charter Members", as I believe they were termed, were given special deals. When we received the PeoplePC account, no one in the family used AOL's computers to log in, so we reduced the membership to a $9.95/month membership that requires us to log in through PeoplePC. Using a direct dial to AOL costs us $1/minute I believe! The PeoplePC deal was a 3 year, $5/month membership, but they cut $15 out for prepaying at the beginning. So I guess it cost us $4.58/month :D Yeah, Russ, we should hook up. I'll contact you this weekend. ;)
