OT/axis of weasels.

I'm sorry, but I find this hilarious. No offence to our German and French members intended at all. I just found this to be the funniest remark and back handed appology I have ever heard! Rumsfeld Sorry for 'Axis of Weasels' Remark (2003-01-22) -- U.S. Secretary Defense Donald Rumsfeld apologized today for referring to France and Germany as an "Axis of Weasels." "I'm sorry about that Axis of Weasels remark," said Mr. Rumsfeld. "I didn't mean to dredge up the history France and Germany share of pathetic compliance with ruthless dictators." The Defense Secretary said he was "way out of bounds" with the comments. "I should have known better than to remind people that these two nations--which live in freedom thanks only to the righteous might of America, Britain and their allies--that these nations are morally and politically bankrupt, and have failed to learn the lessons of history," he said. "It really was an inappropriate thing to say--you know, the Axis of Weasels thing. I really should not have called them the Axis of Weasels. I think it's the 'Weasels' part that was most offensive...you know, when I said that France and Germany form an Axis of Weasels. Of course, I'm so sorry."

C'mon, he didn't really say that... did he??? Reality is getting difficult to grasp. Nothing's shocking. Nothing is non-believable. Maybe he really did say that - could be, probably not, but geez..

It's so funny because it's so true - France and Germany behave as though they have completely forgotten the lessons taught by the failure of the League of Nations, the Versailles Treaty, the Kellogg-Briand pact, and the horror of Nazism. Funny how all those eastern European nations like the Czech Republic, which toiled under totalitarianism for much of the 20th century, are right in our corner when it comes to Iraq. I think I would consult their expertise on confronting tyranny above all; they know it when they see it. You'd think frickin' GERMANY would know better.

France came to the rescue for US when we were still struggling to become a sovereign nation. We paid them back in WWII, but we still have to face the fact that we owe France for our independence. And that big, green statue they gave us. ;)

" To the contrary, Jode, they remember all too well what it's like to have a greedy, megalomaniacal dictator come to power through questionable means, abrogate international treaties and civil rights, scapegoat a race of people and "pre-emptively" attack other soveriegn nations. They have learned first hand lessons that our country seems to have long forgotten. I say this as someone married to a German, with many European friends, they take these issues much more to heart than most Americans.

So their excuse for giving Saddam a pass is... what?

Nobody said anything about giving Saddam a pass. There's a lot of ground between giving him a pass and attacking his country outright. One must remember, also, that attacking his country is very different than attacking him. Any military actions would have far more effects on the people of Iraq than they would have on him personally. So basically we'd be punishing & killing the people that we accuse him (correctly, I'm sure) of oppressing. Our previous attacks resulted in the deaths of over a million folks, directly & indirectly, yet SH remains a wealthy, powerful, healthy dictator. How much money did we spend then, and how much will we spend now, that could otherwise go to feeding, housing & educating people, rather than killing them?

Anybody who thought this was a real story for more than 2 seconds is hereby prohibited from ever taking themselves seriously again. Sheesh, guys. Next time, try not to let your hatred of the politicians you disagree with cause your brains to melt. Regards, Brian T

This satire IS based on comments and attitudes which are real, that's why it is satire and not simply humor. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/americas/view/30624/1/.html

Rumsfeld has already shown a lack of tact and judgement with the "old Europe" remark; the whole administration seems to favor an old school John Wayne attitude in making inadvertant gaffes. Plausible. I suppose you don't remember "We start bombing Moscow in five minutes"...

American politics is on an inexorible path towards the surreally bizarre, yes. But we're a good 10-20 years away from the point where the sitting SecDef could actually make such a statement. The only thing in this thread that took me by surprise was that it wasn't a The Onion article. When I first read it I just assumed it was from The Onion. It was funny as hell though. --Dave
