mlan or Mbox2?

Gods element

Recommended Posts

Which of the two would be best for recording? mlan or Mbox2? i have an s90es which i plan on using for most of the sounds. The s90es came with Cubase LE. I would like to get some vocals into the recordings and hence my need for an interface. Will the mbox2 work as well as mlan and the i88x? And will protools work as well as Cubase on the s90es for the midi sequencing?

thanks in advance,

First, to optimize your MLAn experience you will need to upgrade Cubase to Cubase SX3 ($170 USD??)

Second, setting up MLan is a real hassle so unless you are technically inclined (read: a computer networking kinda specialist or simply masochistic) or someone who can help you set it up you are in for some major work even before you can even get a signal into Cubase from either your s90es (with an MLan card installed) or from your i88x.

I have a MLan studio and I do like it; however, I am probably masochistic.. :)

The concept behind MLAN is great. No doubt in the not-too-distant future we'll all be using something like that due to the excellent flexibility -- especially now that 100Mb/s and even Gb/s ethernet is becoming affordable.

It should be easy too. Hopefully before too long it will be.

Oh, the next step (of course) is wireless. You'll start your mixer program (or, for live work, just turn on your mixer), and as you turn on the other units they'll just appear in the channels you've assigned for them. No cables other than power!

OK, time to wake up.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I fall under the computer geek catagory so I don't think I should have a problem with mlan. Although the Mbox2 sounds great for a well priced all-in-one recorder. What I'm curious about is how well does the midi sequencing work on the Mbox2? It would be nice to hear from someone who uses the Mbox2 for midi sequencing.

thanks

If it is of any help, the mbox will definitely get you into the ProTools (PT) environment which has a broad user base. I'm sure mlan will serve the same purpose as far as getting your music into the computer, but in regard to compatibility with other studios where PT is pretty much a standard, mbox provides a more accesible route into it. Good luck with your decision.

I've considered getting mLan for my MotifES. One thing you might consider is possibility of buying other instruments in the near future, or trading your S90ES. MLan sort of locks you into that S90.

My question to mLan users, does it work well with 4 pin Firewire? I've considered it to go with my laptop which has the small firewire jack.
