Philip OKeefe Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Still no G5's? My dad's gonna be disappointed. :( Prices look a bit better though.

Philip OKeefe Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 I'm a PC user too... but this is a MAC thread, for the people who are interested in the new MACS. Do we have to let this fall into yet another Mac vs PC debate? Come on folks - show a little class.
Gus Lozada Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 I will always take Burguer King over MaC ... wait a moment... Keeping in line with this topic, I'm very happy both with the G4 speed bump and with the new flat panel choices and pricing. I may very well buy a third Mac this year, keeping my iMac for office duty, my current G4 for OS 9 only apps & cards (such as Cubase VST and the Korg OASYS PCI card), and buying a new G4 for OS X apps & cards. not coaster MODERATOR Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 I 'm only half way to the "every 3 years" rule but it's getting hard to resist a dual 1.25 for $1,500 bucks. That's a lot of native power.
Dylan Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Where did you see a Dual 1.25GHZ for $1500? The Apple store shows only a single 1GHZ CPU for that price.
offramp Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Well, for me the timing couldn't have been any better, seeing that my faithful old 7300 died this weekend. This makes the 'boring' old 1 Ghz G4's even more affordable. (AND...I get them at dealer cost :thu: ) RaderRanch: Perhaps you haven't heard one, lately. I did, yesterday. MUCH quieter There's been a change in the composition, design, and placement of the heatsink fins, as well as the fans. "They seem ackward." Apparently as much as a dictionary is. I've upped my standards; now, up yours.
Alndln Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 2mb of L3 is nice, but no mention of L2 amount( ;) )or how much the FSB has been bumped up to,my guess is 133/133(266)to accommodate PC 2100 DDR.Also no mention of G4(chip) core changes. My guess is that your'e getting an extra 400 MHZ and a slightly boosted FSB to finally accommodate DDR 2100(slowest DDR right now) with the same heat as the last G4's.I'm just trying to be informative as possible here,no Mac/PC crap.So I'll keep what I'm really thinking to my self. Henchman Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Is this the new line of MAC's that will only boot with OSX? IMDB Credit list President George Washington: "The government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian Religion." President Abraham Lincoln: "The Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my religion."
Philip OKeefe Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 I think so Henchman... I'm not sure though. Last I heard, all new Macs shipped after 1/1/03 will run OS X only - no go with older OS versions.
Salyphus Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Mostly correct about OSX-only booting, though they are still selling a couple of OS9-compatible models. These new Macs are just a minor refresh, nothing exciting really, just making sure they don't get too stale. That's why they released them today and not at Macworld. The real kickass machines will be based on the new IBM chip and hopefully will be out later in the year. I remain happy that I got my Dual 867 in December. I'm still using DP in OS 9 for now as my DAW, and it is running really nicely on this machine. Hope to have DPX soon though and then I won't need OS9 at all.... And as a sidenote, for my development setup I've got two monitors attached (the stock Nvidia card supports this natively) and am running Remote Desktop Connection to display my PC desktop fullscreen on the second monitor, while using the same mouse and keyboard. And if I feel like it I can drag Mac windows over on top of it. It's a pretty sweet setup. Of course, now I want to get a Cinema Display since they've lowered the prices so much. No more RF interference for my guitar pickups! :D

Salyphus Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Yeah, they are 2002 models, but they are still being sold as new for people who need them. Jeff Klopmeyer Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 From what I heard, there's only one reason that Apple has allowed Classic OS to continue: Quark XPress. Quark is the worldwide standard for guys like me that design brochures, ads and other print jobs. there are competing applications, like Adobe's InDesign, that some people argue are better than Quark. But like many things, Quark is such a standard that all designers need the compatibility to work with the outside world of service bureaus and print shops. And guess what? Those morons at Quark still haven't done a carbonized versiion of their product. For what reason, I can't imagine. So, what I heard was that the only reason the new Macs still boot to Classic OS is because of Quark and Quark alone. - Jeff Marketing Communications for MI/Pro Audio My solo music and stuff They Stole My Crayon
Nawledge Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 so what is the real world diff between an 800mhz G3 ibook and the new 12" G4 powerbook?

So, what I heard was that the only reason the new Macs still boot to Classic OS is because of Quark and Quark alone. They are opening themselves to a grave danger. They'd better do something, and do it quick, because someone else could come along with an OSX equivalent of thier application and grab thier niche right out from under them. It may not even have to be as good as the Quark application. The software world is Survival of the Opportunist, not Survival of the Fittest. Alon Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Jeff, tascam guy. The new machines do run classic, but they do not boot into 9. Apple has never said that they will do away with classic. The quark people are part of the reason, they are still offering the previous configurations for sale, which allow booting into 9. alon .

Your mileage may vary. The G4 is available with Superdrive. Is that available on the iBook? The Black Knight always triumphs!
Nawledge Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 not sure Dan, but isn't the super drive to slow to be worth getting?, better to just get the combo drive me thinks
