jeffbayson Posted January 28, 2003 Posted January 28, 2003 AOL may hire my humble home studio to record audio to accompany some banner ads. They want a quote within the next few hours. I would like to know the going rate for some of these services, so I know what to charge them. I will probably go slightly under the going rate - they're only coming to me in the first place because they assume I will be cheaper than the production houses they have already approached. I will be recording 5 audio clips: 20-30 seconds each of straight voiceover, no sound effects, no music, etc. It will probably take about 3 hours. SO... I need an estimate for Hourly studio rate Hourly voiceover rate (They may provide one of the voiceover artists, and I will provide the other voice. Otherwise, I may hire a freelancer for the other voice). Additional production costs? (Not sure what these might be - all I can think of is CD's and jewel cases. Big whoop.) Any suggestions?
big K Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 I sugest that you make up the rate yourself... ask your self how much you really think you deserve. what are you provideding them with. Tell them about why they should use your studio ( in terms of what they want , not what you have... AKA make value for them).. after that you tell them you really want the contract, you usally charge XXX but you don't want price to stop them from getting someone who is qualified and great and all that, so you can move a bit if they are still interested in your servies. cheers, .. I know this didn't help much. Kevin nemrava. token canadian
ernest828 Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 Sounds like a simple gig. Whats your hourly recording rate? + 1 Voiceover Talent ($150) x 3 (hours) + CDs (whatever you charge I usually charge $10/ea.) = YOUR AOL QUOTE Peace, Ernest
Dave Bryce Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 When I do voice over work, I charge $125 an hour for the studio, and $145 (AFTRA rate) an hour for the VO. Hope that helps... dB ==> David Bryce Music • Funky Young Monks <== Professional Affiliations: Royer Labs • Music Player Network
ernest828 Posted January 29, 2003 Posted January 29, 2003 AFTRA rate is around $125 - $150 for an hour I believe so... This could be an interesting thread dealing with voice over work rates and composing music/jingle rates for 30 sec and 60 sec spots. Alot cheaper than the 2.2 million per 30 sec spots the Super Bowl was offering up. :) Ernest

jeffbayson Posted January 29, 2003 Author Posted January 29, 2003 Thanks for all of your suggestions. Unfortunately, I had to send a quote before I got your thoughts. I may have low-balled myself a bit, but on the other hand, it's an easy gig, and they're only using me because they're strapped for cash. I asked for $100/hr for use of my studio (including my engineering) and an add'l $25/hr for voiceovers. If they were to use another studio, with me doing voiceovers, my rate would be $80/hr (they brought up this possibility). I would only say a word or two, anyway; it's primarily a woman reading, with me grunting a reply here and there. Thanks again!
ernest828 Posted January 30, 2003 Posted January 30, 2003 Damn I know AOL is not doing so well this year but $100 an hour is too much? Damn. Did I say that already? It sounds more like a corporate giant trying to get the most out of you (little small business). Personally, I would give them my rate which is fair and then let them decide. Most corporations have no clue what is involved. Even though its a simple gig, the point is that audio production can greatly inhance their multi million dollar 30 second commercial and they don`t want to pay more than $150 an hour or whatever you felt was too high. Anyway, I hope you get the gig. I noticed you`re in Brooklyn. I am too. Mill Basin to be exact. How `bout you? I am getting into the jingle world, maybe we can talk and share some info. Peace, Ernest
