Anifa Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 Hey folks, any of you that ever browse over to my site, MusicBizBuzz.net; my hosting company's server has been down since right before midnight last night and is still down this morning at 5:45 am. I cannot get through on Tech Support to find out what's up; busy, busy, busy signal. I did, however, leave a message for return call. My friendly avatar is missing in action because the picture actually pulls from my site (maybe I'll change it) I hope the server is just down for maintnance because I just spent three days completely overhauling my web site for a newer screen size (reduced to where is fits inside average window screens :D ) Unfortunately, as I will learn to SAVE to disk some day, I did not back up my works this time around. The last save disk I conducted was in December 2002.......... Gads!!! I hope it's only a hiccup and not a loss of storage!!!!!!!!! The site will be inaccessible temporarily; as I plan to monitor this like a hawk until the server comes back up or I get some feedback from my Host. If it's going to be down........ well, I may go ahead and transfer my domain to another Hosting server; it's been a consideration. (unfortunately I would have to load in the December version prior to the updates.) You can take the man away from his music, but you can't take the music out of the man. Salyphus Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 Actually, the internet is pretty screwed right now, there's a been a huge denial of service attack going on for several hours....yep, someone found a new Micro security hole .. Jotown Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 I once had a server go down on me at Ruby Tuesday's Restaurant. That is one sampler platter I shall never forget. :D Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"
Anifa Posted January 25, 2003 Author Posted January 25, 2003 WOW!!! Sal, I'm on a Windows server... could very well be the case. Ironically, I had planned to move my domain over to BlueDomino or InfoPop this last month (Janaury 4th) upon my renewal date with this server, and my nephew talked me out of it stating that I was getting a steal of a price for the services offered on my server.......... Guess who's going to be getting a phone call BRIGHT AND EARLY if my server doesn't get this thing under control soon? This kid is "supposed" to be an IT prodigy.... been TEACHING computer workshops for the Johnson County Junior College since he was sixteen. He's now nineteen and is the senior designer for the Kansas State School of the Blind; dealing with computerized equipment and web readiness for the visually impaired and legally blind. Pretty bright kid; but maybe this time I should've followed my OWN instincts. You can take the man away from his music, but you can't take the music out of the man. Mats Olsson. Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 I guess that explains why I cant reach several sites I frequently visit, including my web mail account. /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
realtrance Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 yep, couldn't log on my usual way today, either. rt
Mats Olsson. Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 I just read in the newspaper that Kevin Mitnick is now allowed to use computers again... .....coincidence? /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
not coaster MODERATOR Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 My online college classes are down too. I guess I can't go to school this weekend :D
Anifa Posted January 25, 2003 Author Posted January 25, 2003 Well, I finally got in touch with my server and they have no indication when the problem will be resolved. Their main site is back online, but they are saying that this is a worm similar to the CODE RED that keeps on pinging the servers and registering a denial of access error. I pulled a search on CNN relative to the attack and they state that MS issued a patch for this worm about six months ago, and the servers that are under attack failed to upgrade. CNN - Internet Worm I hope to have a BETTER answer from my server later on today than "NO IDEA" when the situation will be under control. They claim my actual pages are secure and protected against the attack but remain inaccessible due to the mounds of traffic being reproduced by this worm. I'll definitely be looking into a domain transfer... Damn! I should've listened to bad vibes when I was feelin' em. not coaster MODERATOR Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 Even the banner ads are timing out. This is a pretty widespread problem and I hope it gets fixed sooner than later.

StoneKnife Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 I was just getting hammered last night (and am tempted to add, suffering a bunch of 'net attacks) with probes from Korea, China, Germany, and several domestic universities including Harvard (rah-ther!) While trying to browse for a new Western Digital hard drive (one o' them 8meg-buffer-uns) it was actually impossible to even open the main Western page for awhile, then no dice on the details link. Thanks for the link to the news page. This forum is outstanding for shared information like that. "We are the Federales... Mats Olsson. Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 There's some good and helpful info here From Dave Winer's newsletter: "***Quick fix To system managers who may be enjoying a relaxing weekend, away from their servers, a quick fix comes from Freedom.Org. "Firewall port 1434/UDP traffic, and reboot the affected SQL servers." That should shut down the virus that's causing the havoc, if it has infected any machines on your local network." Packet loss log: -------------------- From BetaNews: "Internet traffic slowed to a crawl early Saturday morning as a virus-like worm exploited a known flaw in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and flooded the world's digital backbones." Should read: "Internet traffic slowed to a crawl early Saturday morning as a virus-like worm exploited a flaw in MS SQL Server Admins, who failed to apply a patch available since June 2002, and flooded the world's digital backbones." -------------------------------- A suggested name for this outbreak is "Bill's Tapeworm". /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Anifa Posted January 25, 2003 Author Posted January 25, 2003 Well, my chit-chat with my hosting company in asking them if they had installed the patch from MicroSoft must have paid off because my site came back online around 1:15 pm. I've read a bunch of the reports related to this attack and they are suggesting that they tracked around 5:30 this morning. My site went down ABSOLUTELY around 11:30 to 11:45 last night; I was in the middle of working on web updates. I "DID" dig my nephew out of bed this morning with a phone call... good thing though.... the Kansas State School of the Blind's site was down also. Did him a favor. OH yeah, I published my MOST CURRENT UPDATES to DISC :thu: That would have been a SERIOUS loss of hours had I not been able to retrieve the last major overhaul I performed just last week. techristian Posted January 26, 2003 Posted January 26, 2003 My website http://musicinit.com was down a few times in the past few days from frequent "denial of service" attacks. (part of this worm) But my new 1/2 server from http://fortweb.com (my newest webhost) seemed to be humming along at http://teachmedrums.com Luckily both of my servers are Linux based. They are only down because the worm is making so many requests. One newspaper reported that the worm can request up to 128 megs per second from a single server.I read an article that said it infected 39,000 computers. It attacks computers running Microsoft SQL software. Bank of America customers were unable to withdraw money from 13,000 ATMs because of this thing! So don't blame your webhost. Anifa Posted January 26, 2003 Author Posted January 26, 2003 Dan,
So don't blame your webhost.
I "DO" hold my Host accountable for updating the advised security holes within their systems as it is a part of the service that I pay for. Had there not been warnings issued six months prior to the attack it would be entirely different. I have other issues with my Host related to downgrading the systems when they bought out the previous owners. No details, but in this particular situation, I do blame my webhost. videoeditor1 Posted January 26, 2003 Posted January 26, 2003 Gang, Visualize a) America going to war with "X" country or b) Going to the polls for national elections or c) it's Dec 16th, the zenith of the busiest shopping season of the year or d) much of the east coast is under a wicked cold snap, as well as facing a winter nor'easter and Because of one fucking company having a controlling share of the software that runs our various systems... 1. Critical communications get bogged down in scenario "A" 2. All those fancy electronic polling stations crap out 3. Online shopping, as well as the physical logistics or transaction tracking and the relocation of goods (think UPS, FED EX etc) crawls to a halt - even if for one or two days 4. Power utilities and telecommunications companies, alerady under a strain from the 18 inches of snow, high winds and rough seas lose their ability to communicate via TCP/IP. Now combine any two of those scenarios, while remembering that we have a few stock exchanges being run across the countries. Microsoft has become a distinct threat to our national security. Certainly every platform has security flaws, but it's news to me that Microsoft (with it's SQL) had so much of the market under it's belt.
Tedster Posted January 26, 2003 Posted January 26, 2003 The National Weather Service office where I work uses the web for coordination between offices in Guam, Honolulu, Anchorage, Kelowna B.C., Wellington N.Z., and Melbourne, Australia.
