T.H. Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Is this process as easy and any other computer ? I'm use to swapping parts out of PC's and such, but with my G4 I dont want to get into: extensions, re-setting programs and such (at least that's what I heard from a APPLE tech) I guess he wanted me afraid, so that I would pay him to do it. I've changed CD drives for CDR's on PC's so this process should'nt be difficult on MAC's, or am I wrong ? Thanks
Groovepusher Sly Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Any particular reason for not using an external Firewire drive? Sly  Whasineva ehaiz, ehissgot ta be Funky!
T.H. Posted January 24, 2003 Author Posted January 24, 2003 No, not really, I have a external CD-R (BUS-LINK) and I have a DVD in my MAC, so instead purchasing a whole other box (external firewire box that is) why not just change the internal one to DVD-R ? I'm a space nut, hate to have things piled up, but you do have a point.
Salyphus Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I installed a Pioneer 105 DVD-RW, (which is a 4x version of the 'Superdrive') in the second optical bay of my MDD G4. Works without a hitch, nothing to configure at all! If you don't have two optical bays, it is pretty much just as simple, you just have to remove the old drive first. It's really easy to do, and the nice design of the case makes accessing this stuff a breeze. You just open the door and there it is. There is a reason to use an internal and not an external; the internal ones can use iDVD and as far as I know the externals can't. Though I would imagine that will change with the upcoming rev to iDVD since they are charging $50 for the new version... The only thing I had to do was remove the faceplate from the drive so there was enough room for it to eject properly, but that's easy and the G4 has it's own faceplate so nothing is left exposed. You can find good deals on OEM Pioneer drives at dealmac.com. Hope this helps :thu:
Mats Olsson. Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 A ton of good info at: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!
where02190 Posted January 25, 2003 Posted January 25, 2003 I think you hit the nail on the head with the salesgeek trying to drum up extra money in commisisions. It's a very simple process. If you have a second optical bay that is open, install it there and set it as slave. Otherwise remove the current drive and replace it wiht the DVD, setting it as master. Your mac will recognize the drive and you'll be on your way. make sure it run software update to get the latest FW drivers for your Mac, and if you gow ith the Superdrive, go to either Apple or Poineers website for the high speed DVD update. Hope this is helpful. Hope this is helpful. NP Recording Studios Analog approach to digital recording.
