michael saulnier Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 I saw this on the TV news last night. In SoCal and I assume elsewhere, there are many Wherehouse locations. What did they blame? The usual suspects, rampant downloading, lower priced competition... that sort of thing. One example quoted... During Christmas Best Buy was offering Santana's latest CD for $6.99. Because it was a loss leader to get people in the store to buy DVD players and big screens and stuff... This is a another "wake up" call for the industry. These guys move a LOT of product. guitplayer I'm still "guitplayer"! Check out my music if you like... http://www.michaelsaulnier.com
Salyphus Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 All of these companies are going to scapegoat and point fingers, but the bottom line is that CDs are ridiculously priced and people are tired of it. Just because a couple of CDs are used as loss leaders doesn't change that fact. Add to that the current state of popular music and you have the answer, IMHO.
Salyphus Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 From what I've heard Tower may be joining them soon, or has that already happened?
sbrock1san.rr.com Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 I read that Wherehouse received about 50 % of their revenue from video rentals and sales. Maybe they had a difficult time competing with Hollywood Video and Blockbuster Video, both whom offer superior selection and rental terms IMHO.
Steve LeBlanc Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Probably a little of all of the above. I couldn't help but notice they put a lot of their stores in really crappy neighborhoods a few years back. That's why I stopped shopping there. :) http://www.youtube.com/notesleb
Nawledge Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 I think that if the record industry is going to create a new format on which music is bought and sold and if they are going to stop stealing money from, and murdering their artist they should quit complaining and go on and do it already. stop robbing artist stop killing them for sales stop the downloaders stop getting artist dependant on drugs so they can take advantage of them I haven't bought a cd from the wharehouse in I don't know how long, way before the internet. I don't even know anybody who shops at the wharehouse or tower. I think PennyLane and co are the ones who put the wharehouse out of business. cause most record buyers are young kids and they shop at small specialty cd shops not the wharehouse.
Salyphus Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Penny Pincher and her ilk have a lot to do with it too ;)
patrick_dont_fret Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I buy used CDs. Perfectly good CDs, and less than half the cost of a new CD. I've never burned anything (well, I did, but at my friend's house), I used to download from MP3.com, but my computer is now to slow to do that, plus I don't feel like it. I really don't see anything wrong with it. You're actually promoting that artists' stuff when you burn it...other people hear it, begin to like it, possibly buy (or get someone to buy) that person's work, and end up somewhere in New York or California seeing one of their shows. I don't have any full albums, but I've got several live shows that are burned, and are well worth the small amount of time (his computer) could do it in.
Jotown Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 One thing I would like to point out is; It is not just music and movie companies filing bankruptcy. The economy is in the shitter, and bankruptcies are at an all time high. Persoanl, and business. One thing that is lost on some, is that the record industry is suffering the effects of a tanked economy, just like all business's are. The record industry is surely in trouble, but so is Mackie, Mars, and they don't make their money off of CD's. The whole economy is in trouble. That might be why we are going to war my friends. Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"

The only reason Bush can come up with to hide the fact that he can't keep the economy rolling. Let's see, I can think of a few things we can do to jumpstart the economy... lower taxes, its proven that people spend more money when they have more money. Lower prices (an internal, private thing, but it wouldn't hurt) for the same reason as above. We can use our own oil, because Texas has plenty of it. And last but definitely not least, elect a new president.
Chip McDonald Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Don't worry about anything, we'll always have Best Buy and Walmart, we don't need a real choice. Just learn to like flourescent lighting, that's all. Whatever. We're now cresting the farside of the great hill history will describe as the "Glory Days of the United States".
