Philip OKeefe Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Okay guys - I need some suggestions. It's not a super high paying gig, but I want some different horn samples - think Rat Pack type horn parts circa 1960... big band... especially trumpet sections (I'm pretty happy with my saxes and bones for the moment). I can deal with Giga or EIII (or whatever) format. What's good, but not unbelieveably expensive?
Kendrix Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 This isnt exactly a stellar endoresement - perhaps more of a suggetion to avoid some stuff. Ive got the synclavier stuff - good quality - but orchestral - so definately not Big Band -ish. Ive also got something called psychic horns (EMU format as I recall) Its a better match to what ur lookin for - but I'd rate them as a B overall. Not quite as natural sounding as they could be. IM listenting for others suggestions. What are the saxes that you like? What is their charachter? Check out some tunes here: http://www.garageband.com/artist/KenFava
Mark Zeger Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 My favorite is Quantum Leap Brass. Since I play trumpet, I'm picky and these samples are very good. There are single instruments, sections, many different articulations, mutes, brass effects (like sfz, growls, falls, squeals, etc.). No loops, so the sample files are on the large side (but not if you have Giga). There's even a very nice, soft Ben Webster/Stan Getz tenor sax sample. I'll try e-mail you an MP3 of a jingle I did last year using Quantum Leap Brass to recreate a big band. I sequenced single line parts for Alto/Tenor/Bari, Trpts 1/2/3, T-bone 1/2. I was tempted to record my own trumpet leads, but the samples sounded great. Here's a link with a demo: http://www.soundsonline.com/sophtml/details.phtml?sku=QLBGS Most of the demo is orchestral, some of it is a little cheesy, but don't be put off. FYI, I paid $275 for my Kurzweil format set about a year ago.
StoneinaPond Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Ditto on the Quantum Leap Brass. Also available in several formats. Not cheap. Yorik Stone In A Pond "Man will occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of the time he will pick himself up and continue on."
