Computer Processor Upgrade Question

Recommended Posts

I'm contemplating going from a 866 megahertz Pentium III processor to a 1.4 gig Tualatin Celeron because it's the most cost effective thing to do(using a slot adapter) The major difference in the achitecture of the two processors is the Celeron has a 100 megahertz front side buss and the Pentium has a 133 front side buss, so the Celeron is faster but the frontside buss is slower. How does this effect performance and is it a worthwhile upgrade?

One word: AMD Look in to it and don't do this Celeron thing FOR THE LOVE OF GAWD!!!

Yeah I know, AMD good, but when I do that I'm just going to build a whole new computer. I can do this little upgrade very easily for about $100.00 and hopefully get a performance boost. That's the question. Celerons are good processors. The L2 cache on the Tualatin Celerons is the same size as the L2 on the Coppermine Pentium III, in fact the only difference in the specs that I see is the lower front side buss speed.

Yeah, I totally agree with the AMD route. You can get a 1.4 gHZ momboard and processor with an AGP, and 2 PCI slots for as little as $93.00. It rocks compared to a Celery. ..Joe
Setup: Korg Kronos 61, Roland XV-88, Korg Triton-Rack, Motif-Rack, Korg N1r, Alesis QSR, Roland M-GS64 Yamaha KX-88, KX76, Roland Super-JX, E-Mu Longboard 61, Kawai K1II, Kawai K4.

Generally speaking that's true Joe but if you start looking at Intel processors they have about 5 or 6 varieties of what they call a Celeron. The Tualatin Celerons from 1 to 1.4 gig are very similar to the slower Pentium III's that preceded them. They have a bigger L2 Cache than a lot of Celerons and they also have the smaller .13 micron core. Just about any processor you buy these days from Intel or AMD is decent. Durons and Celerons are highly under rated. The VIA processors are another story. They get totally trounced by AMD and Intel which is why you don't hear much about them.

Generally speaking I never bother to spend money upgrading unless I can double my speed. (2X) Also remember this. Celeron and Pentium are apples and oranges. I once upgraded from a 200 mhz pentium to a 450 mhz AMD type. I thought that this more than doubled my speed, but when I ran the BENCHMARKS I was informed that my 450 mhz AMD ran like a 300 mhz pentium! 2 ghz pentiums are coming way down in price now because of new 3 ghz systems arriving. If I were you I would wait a few months, and for the same price you will probably get a 2 ghz P4. Save your money. Dan http://musicinit.com/roland_index.html

WeWus, it doesn't sound worth it to me. Why speed up the processor when you end up making the data pipe smaller? You might end up having to replace some RAM too, if it doesn't like running on the slower bus (& ever if it does, it won't run as efficiently). Save your $$ - in 6 months you'll be able to buy a hot shit P4 for cheap.

Very tricky here. Can your old board handle higher bus/clock speeds? These adapter upgrades don't alway's go as planned and might only result in setting you back more money. Also even though going the AMD route is cheap, you cant just get by with any old Ram or power supply.500mb of quality DDR and a decent Sparkle PSU will set you back a little under $200.00,then you could get a good board and 1700ghz Palomino for around $50.00 a peice. It might be worth waiting till you get $300.00,Plus you'll have the option of being able to upgrade to a 2600ghz later when prices drop.Slapping it together is easy.Your gamble though.

Wewus.... Does your current computing situation meet your needs currently? Do you *need* more speed, or do you simply *want* more speed. IMHO, don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Thank you guys for talking me through that. I have this incessant need to tamper with things whether they're broken or not. I think I'll just add some RAM to this computer and let it be. Nah, can't do that. I think I'll screw around with the partitions again.

Now that i've gotten my Athlon back together, i'm eyeing my k6-II and thinking of installing Solaris on it again. I don't understand, either. Solaris sucks on x86 hardware. just that incessant need to fiddle with stuff i guess.
