mte
hi there well I was wondering what mic or kind of a mic I should use for my upright piano at home. Well I don't need anything professional, because also the piano doesn't have a good sound, but something that I could listen to whitout that my ears would blow up afterwards. Well I have a SM57 for guitar and Beta 58 for vocals, but I didn't think they would sound so baaad on the piano So what AND how many should I try? Another question is positioning. What are best solutions? Thanks in advance, Matej
ricknbokker
Fortunately, the best way to handle this situation is also rather inexpensive. How cool is that?! Go to Radio Shack, and pick up one of their PZM boundary mics. I think they run about $50. When you get home, open up the top of the upright, and attach the mic to the underside of the lid. Velcro or double-sided tape will do the trick. Experiment with placement before attaching. If you can swing it financially, buy two and mount one towards the left, and one towards the right. For the money, this setup is hard to beat. This makes them ideal for a more permanent installation. Hope this helps... Steve
remainanon
Radio Shack PZM, tried and true. I also found an old, beat up Beyer M500 ribbon mic was bee-yootiful on the old piano at Kingsway, the one in the hall by the stairs. JW

mte
Thanks! Is there any web page with some info on that Radio Shack mic or at least a photo? Well I can't go to the shop without knowing model name or something like that I tried on www.radioshack.com but I couldn't find anything named PZM or sth... thanks again, Matej
sign
Radio Shack PZM's work great on (grand)piano. You will have to replace the 1.5v battery by a 9v one. Peace. Duhduh
They're also known as boundary microphones and almost all major mic manufacturers make them.
