Universal Audio and Direct X - Get on the bandwagon

Recommended Posts

For all you guys considering the Universal Audio "Powered Plugins" card... take notice that there's no Direct X support. This means us Sonar guys are Sh*t out of luck... unless you want to use a VST-Direct X wrapper, but that kind of defeats the purpose of offloading effects processing off the host CPU, doesn't it? Their website claims that they are considering Direct X support, mainly if the demand is there. So if you want some killer plugins for your Sonar rig, cruise over to www.uaudio.com and let them know what's on your mind. Tell 'em "We want direct-X support damnit!" -0z-

Well, a Vst to Direct-X wrapper is just going to suck CPU cycles, which kind of defeats the purpose of offloading FX to another chip. What I'm saying is using a "wrapper" simply is not good enough. Native Direct X support is the way to go with this. -0z-

I use Nuendo and Sonar,My VST plugs via the adapter in Sonar don't eat anymore cpu than they do in Nuendo.Besides even if it were true your talking the equivlent of 1 plug eating cpu since the rest are running off the card.I guess it would be ok to support DX so others wouldn't have buy the adapter, but then you wouldn't have acces to VST in Sonar.

I sent them an e-mail requesting native Direct-X support yesterday. I'd buy this card in a heartbeat if it did and if it supports Win 2k/XP solely based on the quality of plug-ins. But until then, since my main apps support Direct-X only, I'll stick with my native plug-ins. Supposedly, the sound quality of the plug-ins is way superior to any other DirectX or VST effects in existence. I keep hearing the argument that one's money is better spent on a faster CPU and that DSP cards like this are a bad investment. But take into consideration that a plug-in bundle like Waves Native Power Pack cost more than this card and doesn't provide DSP nor the quality. Plus, you have a *guaranteed* number of effects that you can rely on always working, regardless of how many tracks you have running. This alone, is worth the price of the card, IMHO. -Dylan This message has been edited by Dylan Walters on 10-09-2001 at 11:19 AM
