I can still remember as a kid watching a documentary on how the old radio dramas were done. These guys were simple yet brilliant. Little things like empty coconut shells for horses walking, and tons of little dopplar tricks I can't even remember.

My master of vocal tricks and harmonies.....BRIAN WILSON....I recently got hold of a beach boys cd. unassembled multi-track versions,as they were being assembled in the studio..Those guys could just plain sing their asses off,and then Brian just made it better.

There is a guitar sound I've been looking for a while now. I'm not even sure its an "effect". The song is, I think, "Cry like a baby" ie when I think of all the good love you gave me, I cry like a baby.....) It has a sound similar to a sitar, but you can tell its played like a guitar, and I hear it on oldies from about '69 - '74. Someone a long time ago told me it was a guitar made by "Coral" called something like "sit-guitar" or something. I've never found one. Anyone ever hear of this or have info. about that crazy sound? Hippie
In two days, it won't matter.

It's a Coral electric sitar. Popular in the 60s...Cry like a baby...B.J. Thomas..."Hooked on a Feeling" (from the AM radio catalog)...were a couple that featured that sound. They have 'em at Quigley's Music here in Kansas City. This message has been edited by Tedster on 10-09-2001 at 09:46 PM

How about the original pop-Theramin track: Good Vibrations. I've been thinking about ordering a theramin kit from PAiA Electronics - around $100 with shipping, with two optional cases that add $35 to $90, depending on what you want. I'm kinda spread out on several instruments as it is, but can you really have too much fun...

He not busy being born

Is busy dyin'.

Speaking of weird old pre-synth effects...what was the instrument on Del Shannon's "Runaway" that played the solo??? They might have used one on that surf-esque instrumental "Telstar", too...

Tedster, way to read my mind! I've had that discussion more than once with various players over the years. I once took the position that it was an early electric violin (it's got an attackless/bowed sound about it) and others thought it was some kind of keyboard. I'm really dying to know what it was.

Do they still make them new, or do you have to pay premium prices 'cuz it's made in the '60's? Is it a "professional" instrument? ; from what I remember about the Coral guitar line, they were along the lines of a Harmony or Sears Silvertone? Thanks, Hippie

And the first Beach Boys song to use Theremin (and technically, it wasn't a Theremin, but that's splitting hairs! see http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/4611/PTE-TPage.html ) was "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" (at the very end), from 'Pet Sounds'. Also check out the Theremin (or Tanner Electro-Theremin/Tannerin/whatever!) on the intro to "Wild Honey". This message has been edited by DougP on 10-10-2001 at 04:40 PM

Hippie... You can call Quigley's at (816) 361-2050. You might want to find out who supplies that line and if anyone in the Detroit area is a supplier. They are new instruments from what I could gather. Can't remember what the price tag read.
