Mark V Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Have there been any {good} movies about musicians lately?[as opposed to musicals]I was talking to someone about it the other day and nothing sprang to mind.Mo Better Blues is still one of my favourites. I once had a quasi-religious experience..then I realised I'd turned up the volume.

Zweite Version Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 check out "sweet and Lowdown", about Emmett Ray, a djangoesque Jazz guitar player. Directed by Woody Allen. I liked it a lot, but don't take my word. "Ya gots to work with what you gots to work with". - Stevie Wonder

I'm exploring a lot of Django's ideas on guitar, and it's interesting to hear guitarists of different styles still being influenced by Reinhardt. I just borrowed Django's Blues on CD from a friend. His version of Brazil on the CD is timeless; it still sounds great today. What I wouldn't mind seeing a movie or documentary of (if there ever can be such a thing) is one of Allan Holdsworth. Though I don't have his solo style down, what makes him attractive to me is his compositional style. From that alone, he's influenced a lot of musicians, not just guitar players. It's one of the more original stylings I've heard in years. Just pick up any of his better albums, like Road Games, Atavachron, Hard Hat Area, Metal Fatigue...you get the idea. To me, his stuff is a real blending of more traditional instrumental jazz, mixed with modern sonic ideas, and prog rock style orchestrations. :) sevenstring.org profile my flickr page
Mats Olsson. Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Wild man blues - a documentary about Woody Allen going to Europe to play with his trad-jazz band. Cool & twisted! /Mats http://www.lexam.net/peter/carnut/man.gif What do we want? Procrastination! When do we want it? Later!

Salyphus Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 If you are interested in documentaries about Jazz musicians, I can highly recommend: Triumph of the Underdog, about Charles Mingus One of the best docu's I've ever seen! Straight No Chaser, about Thelonious Monk. Also excellent! Scratch is also excellent if you are interested in the history of the Hip-Hop DJ.

Jotown Posted January 23, 2003 Posted January 23, 2003 Sweet and lowdown, and Round Midnight are very good. Shine though is probably the best pure film of the lot mentioned so far. Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"
