There seems to be one on every thread. He will later say that he was misunderstood, and meant no harm, and that it was all in good fun. Oh boy.......

Whilst I agree that the timing was probably to incite some replies, with that exception, why exactly would this thread offend some people? When I moved to Savannah from NY, I was surprised to see that we gets days off for Confederate Memorial day, and Robert E. Lee's birthday, but if it IS Robert E. Lee day, then what is the problem? I am confused by your reply. ..Joe
Whilst I agree that the timing was probably to incite some replies,
Your answer is in your question. For the record; Robert E. Lee's birthday is the 19th of January. Today is the 20th. Unless you are living under a rock, you know that today is the official celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday. Now if Cowbellallen just got his days mixed up, and innocently made a mistake, I stand corrected. On the other hand, if you read his post, it seems to me he was trying to stir something up. Thats why Sal asked him, "why he was trolling?" There are times to be funny and irreverant, and there are times to be respectful and earnest. I think this is one of those "respectful and earnest" times. Perhaps you disagree.

First of all Robert E. Lee wasn't a great American General, he was a great Confederate General. Ok Alan your move,(start Jeopardy music in background) this is a critical point in your SSS career, I'd suggest saying something like hmmmmmmm, I wasn't thinking. but it's up to you.

Actually, I haven't read a whole lot on Robert E. Lee...but from what I've heard, he is a guy to be respected. I believe his adversaries had great respect for him. I don't believe his desire to command the Confederate forces was so much out of a pro-slavery stance as it was from a desire to protect his homeland, Virginia. If history had had him being born on the other side of the Potomac, he probably would have been commanding the Union forces instead. He attended West Point, and wrestled grievously over the South's desire to secede. But, whether or not you agree with his motives, he stood up for his convictions, commanded brilliantly, and surrendered gracefully. That said...there are no Civil War veterans left alive, obviously. Although some folks still think they're fighting it. Happy Birthday, Dr. King!

Tedster: You speak closer to the truth than you know: Lee WAS asked to command the Union forces, but could not desert Virginia. Not the South, not the concept of slavery, but Virginia. That's why he declined that offer and then went on to command the Southern forces. To show how much he was respected by the Northern Generals, I believe that it was US Grant, when asked: "Had Lee not commanded the Southern forces, would it have made a difference in the war?" His reply was: "Yes. We would have won it two years earlier." ..Joe
I have nothing but respect for Robert E. Lee. He believed in hiw war as much as General Grant believed in his. There is a painting of the surrender at the end of the civil war that depicts the two men shaking hands. In Grants biography, his account of that moment, and his respect for Robert E. Lee is one of the most moving stories in the book. That being said, the issue here is not about any disrespect for General Lee, but Cowbellallens intentions in posting this thread. I hope to be illuminated, and corrected.

Grant was a raving alcoholic. He was no better suited to lead this country than Bush is now. His involvement in the Credit Mobilier scandal was less than dignified. He was the first president to recieve a speeding ticket...driving a frickin' carriage for goodness'sake. All the more reason to drink up in honor of Lee. He was a great man, however much he disliked what he had to do, he did it brilliantly. And Cowbell Allen, I stand behind you brother. I'm sure you just got your stuff mixed up...and from what your post reads, it sounds like you were just pointing out a coincidence in birthdays. And the ellipse at the end shows that you are quite amused by it. I mean, what else could "Oh what joy" mean? Really...quit having that old "Black History Month stick up your ass" attitude that everyone's gonna have for the next month...there's no white history month, and no one's complaining, so shut up. I live in Memphis...I get to put up with this crap in full force...the rest of you don't. So shut up. Sorry for yelling.

Nono, I don't mean anything by it, nor did I have any intentions that Jotown thinks I do. Robert E. Lee was a great general, and if he had the same soldiers that Grant did, there is absolutely no way that he would have lost the "civil" war. And yes is birthday was yesterday. Why can't you celebrate his birthday the day after? Or the day before? I believe that some peopl say "Merry Christmas" maybe weeks before it even arrives, and may continue to be said weeks after it passes.

Let me continue your analogy: what you are doing is the equivalent of telling a bunch of jews "Merry Christmas" on the first day of Hannukah.

Hey Patrick, and Allen, I think it might just be getting a little past your bedtime. Now Martin Luther King's birthday is almost over, so drink up your Ovaltine, and go to sleep............ :bor:

While i must say that both Tedster and joegerardi speak it the way it truly was... i must still contemplate Cowbell's motive to announce this today, and not yesterday. I hope all things are in best interest. In any event, of course General Robert E Lee was a great man. How can i disagree, when my own grandfather, Harley W.Lee, was his great grandson? And before i'm through boring you folks with any more family tree stuff, please enjoy my avatar, which is the Coat of Arms for the Coffey Clan of Ireland. They were decendents of the O'Cobhthaigh Kingdom, of whom there was much little recorded about, unfortunately. This follows up my Grandfather's mother's side. So even if not by my own virtue, i may deserve to live on bloodlines alone, however diminished they be.

I'm sure Cowbell was just a bit late writing that up, and meant no harm. So fuck off, will you?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but will this day next year be Monday, January 19, the same day as Robert E. Lee's birthday and Martin Luther King holiday? And, no I don't mean anything by this, I just don't have a calender handy.

Or, that you made a mistake? Or that you are just trying to stir up some sludge?
