Super 8 Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 NOTE: I posted this in the Bass forum and am getting a pretty lame response so far -much to my surprise. I really anxious to hear what people have to say, so I'm reposting it here. [i] Oh, and some of you bass player should be ashamed of yourselves for not relying to me other post! Shame, shame, shame... It's taken me some time to find out that Me'Shell Ndegeocello was the bass player with Arrested Development on a 1992 rerun of Saturday Night Live I saw a few months ago. I heard them play "Tennessee" and was just blown away by the absolute bad-ass funk coming from the bass-player. "Wow! Whose playing that?!" "Is that a girl?" "Is that the same chick that did that cool bass riff and sang with John Melloncamp on "Wild Night"?" Yup, sure is... Turns out she not only played bass on the SNL performance, she also directed the band! Wow, not bad at all! I figured you folx here in the Lowdown forum would know all about her. But for those of you who don't, you have GOT to hear her play! What a cool approach! I wish I could describe what she was doing on "Tennessee"... Maybe some of you know what I'm talking about. I don't know if she was on a fretless or not, but she was 'pulling' and 'pushing' her intonation all over the place, and it sounded great! Very, very edgy. I don't know how else to describe it... Okay, I'm gonna shut up now and let you bass players do the talking... Super 8 Hear my stuff here
Salyphus Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 She's cool and very talented. I met her at the afterparty at a private David Bowie concert a couple of years ago. I thought she was pretty cute too :D I think people should listen to the songs you mention if they haven't. She's definitely got the groove.
patrick_dont_fret Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 Ok, I'll say it again, just to get the ball rolling. Yes, she is quite the bass goddess. Definitely one to check out, if you ever get the chance.

gtrmac Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 Check out her CD's on Maverick Records. The first one "Plantation Lullabies" has her playing bass, piano, singing, and producing and it's one of the funkiest records in the world. The other records aren't bad either but the first one is my favorite. Mac Bowne G-Clef Acoustics Ltd. Osaka, Japan
whitefang Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 Would it be easier to figure out what she does on that bass, or how to pronounce that last name? Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

Sunburn In Cyprus Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 Yes, she's an excellent bass player, I love the feeling on her early records (for instance in the song "The way" - funky) and there has been also a collaboration with herbie Hancock called "Nocturnal sunshine", great song, fat groove :) - Ulli - Sunburn In Cyprus - ElectricDancePop Find our music at http://www.besonic.com/sic
jschmidt Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 She has a CD that came out in 96 called "Peace Beyond Passion" that is great. Rail Jon Rogut was the engineer on it, if Im not mistaken. So he should know how to pronounce her name :) Great classic funk/r+b/soul sounds You guys should add that one to your record collection I bought "Plantation Lullabys" after and didnt like it as much. It was too inconsistant, some good material but a lot of bad.
Graham English Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 I saw her live a couple years ago and her band was tight! They were so in the pocket. And her Clav playing blew me away. Too funky. ++ Graham English ++ Ear Training, Songwriting Tips, and Music Theory
ace20019 Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 Her father was my assistant band director in high school.....He's also an accomplished jazz/blues saxonphonist by the name of Jaques Johnson ( I hope I spelled that right ). She is a bad ass bass player though from what I hear, her son's father is a better bass player than her.

Roto Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003
Originally posted by Rail Jon Rogut: N De (as in dent) Gay Oh Cello (as in the instrument).
and I believe the accent is on the "De" I saw her a couple years ago having known who she is but not ever hearing more than a few songs. It was a good show. Even better was earlier in the day she did an interview. She seems like a cool person in general and very supportive of her band. Another great bass playing front woman is Laura Love. Not the same kind of music as Me'shell, but they share the funk :thu:
