Hello everybody. My very lovely wife of nearly 10 years just surprised me tonight with a very lovely gift of a Boss BR-1180CD digital recording studio. Awesome! I'm finally graduating from my caveman 8-track cassette days. Well, as many of you out there know, us musicians can be pretty tough to buy for as far as our gear goes. I've been doing some research and I think that I can get something even a little bit better for about the same money. She paid about a grand for the Boss which is a 10 track(8 + 1 paired channel). It also has a CD-R/RW drive built in. At this point in time I'm not exactly sure of all the internal goodies. The 2 other models I've been looking at are the Yamaha AW16G (16 track, 8 + 4 paired) & the Fostex VF160 (16 track, all individual i think). If anyone out there can offer me some insight on these models or any others in roughly the same price area I would much appreciate it. Thanks alot. bob

I have no insight at all into this, but is it possible to run down to a store or two and check them out and see which one seems the most intuitive to you?

From what I've seen the Fostex is quite easy to use but the EQ section leaves a lot to be desired (only 2 fixed bands, no sweep) but that should not be a big problem if you work your microphones/sound source/room to shape sound. In my opinion it also sounds pretty good. A great bonus with Fostex is that there's a SCSI port on the back (I don't know if Boss & Yamaha have thiis, but it can be an essential feature). Fostex sports only one heaphone out. Boss/Roland, generally speaking (there are exeptions): fine products, often a little non-intuitive to use, incredibly crappy user manuals. Other than checking them out in the store, look for forums/support groups on the web. Are they active/helpful? Also, how large are the HD's? What backup format is used - can it be imported/exported to from a computer? /Mats

I still use my old Roland VS840EX once in a rare while. If I were to go that route again I'd either spring for the top of the line 24 trck Roland(VS2480HD) with monitor&mouse,or the Yamaha(AW4416) with DSP cards. The best value hands though is the Korg D1600 or D12-12,easily the most bang for the buck budget-wise and I'd take it over the Boss or anything else(Akai/Fostex)in it's price range($1,000 or so)).

I`m a DAW guy. Do you have a newer MAC? or PC? For a $1000 you could get DP3 and a 2408 MKII. You`ll get yourself 24+ digital tracks, all the editting you`ll EVER need and MIDI. And don`t forget the plugs. Nice gift though from your wife. I think its great that she supports your art. Enjoy, Ernest

Actually, the Roland stuff will make your brain hurt trying to sort the operating system, BUT, the Boss incarnations are really easy to use and of a high quality IMO. The machine you have has a CD built in for your backing up of projects. I really like the Roland effects, especially for guitar. Have you tried it out? Have you read the manual? In the price range you're talking, I think I'd stick with what she got you. And cheers for having a very cool and understanding wife. :thu:

Protools, DP, etc give you a minimum of 24-32 audio tracks, 64 midi tracks, with expandability options that vary. You'll want to be adding a second internal HDD for audio files,, but thats simple and relatively cheap. Hope this is helpful.

Hope this is helpful.
