Last week i received my Stage. The acc piano are very good, superior. EPs are awesome. Organ is superb, Synth is beatiful. The action for me is very good. Very easy to play. Everythings is in front of you. I´m very happy.

Regards and Happy New Year for everyone.

Congrats, Franky. I've been drooling over the STAGE for quite some time now and in spite of the controversy on the piano sounds, I'm sure I'll eventually get one. Now that the rumor of the 76-key version is out there (true or not?), I think I'll hang tight a little bit longer. At least until after NAMM to see if the STAGE 76 is officially announced or perhaps the Electro 3.

Regards,

Eric

I'm gone guys... see ya.

I've gotta go down the street and make a buy of some GUITAR CENTER stock.

Eric's in a buying mood again. :D

Eric, your wife must have diamonds and pearls and drive a Lexus. 'cause if you're like me, anytime *I* get a new piece of gear, *SHE* has to get a little treat too.

I had to stop buying stuff because the stuff that I had to buy for HER just to get ME outta the doghouse was costing me more than the stuff I was buying for myself. (Say that three times before breakfast.)

Eric you are truly a GEAR SLUT. Of course, that makes you my HERO. ;)

Can I come over to your house this weekend to play with all the neat keyboard toys?

Come on by anytime you like, brother Tom.

I've been in a buying mood for the past 2 weeks, but it has been unrequited.

The wife has a few diamonds and pearls (circa mid-'90s :D ), but no Lexi in the driveway here. Lots of older vehicles and the wife's newer SUV. You think I dump tons of cash into cars when I could be buying gear?!:D

I've managed to stave off the GAS demons this Christmas break and wait until NAMM. Let's see if this works or not.

Regards,

Eric

Really? I haven't played a Stage yet, but I was under the impression from reviewers that the Stage ac. pianos were not much of an improvement over those of the Electro (which are garbage).
The Stage ac pianos are indeed awesome! They're more dynamic than any other rompler piano patch I've tried - probably more than most software pianos too. I really like the basic sound of the samples too, these are not just sterile workstation patches. Having all the fx and assignments right in front of you without submenues makes it extremely simple to tweak, and the compressor is a great addition. To me, playing the stage feels almost like playing the real instruments, with loads of world class fx right in front of you! It's all in the responsiveness; this is the kind of instrument that almost plays you..!

+1000 on the dynamic range and tonal quality of the pianos....

What do you use the compressor for? I haven't really played with it much, but all it's done for me was limit the dynamic range of the patches I play... Not exactly what I am looking to do... Although I can see myself using it on a synth lead...

glad you enjoy your instrument! Just a personal observation but I had a play on one today and the pianos struck me as nothing out of the ordinary. I found the keyboard really light, quite springy but not squishy. However no way this could remotely be said to resemble a real piano action. They are not following the Kawai philosophy here.

The sample grouping is very obvious, but worst of all the tone does not change very much between high and low velocities, just sounds as if the volume is being reduced. This makes it really hard to create tonal foreground and background. I found it quite a hard sound as well, the llight action tends to bring out the FF's when i played with my normal piano technique.

Clavi was pretty average, rhodes are usual nord stuff etc. Synth is rather weak and seems tagged on, i can imagine only ever using about 5% of it.

I am not sure the all in one kbd concept works. although it looks really classy I can't see this doing much more than being the usual piano, rhodes clavi sounds in my setup. The whole layering splitting thing gets a real handful.

For me the sounds and action don't justify the price tag, it's just not much of an improvement (if any) over boards much lower in price.

hichakhok,

The pianos came alive when I tweaked the dynamics/velocity curve. It really depends on your playing style as well, so, when you tweak the velocity curve to your liking, you'll have a better idea of what the pianos can do on this board. Also, I eq'd mine a bit, to bring out more of the mids and the highs...

There's a delicate balance that must be adhered to.

We got my wife an elliptical trainer over the holidays. Couple of days ago, she tells me my 40th birthday present is going to be about a month late, and is there anything else I could get myself in the interim...... ;);)

So I'm going to be trading up my Evo for a PEK within the next couple of weeks.

Do you see the balance at work here??

Stay tuned for the studio pic.

Oh yeah, congrats Franky. :thu:

Your right, I am sure with a bit of tweaking it could be a really useful board, price is just out of my range for the kind of gigs I would use it for. I think my review was a bit harsh, it's actually very seductive . I was trying out in bad conditions, keyboard was about 15 inches from floor and only headphones so I had to stoop crouched over it Glenn Gould style As an aside, I have to nominate Turnkey where i had a play on it as the most useless music shop to buy music gear in london

I really liked the stage alot. I would seriously consider buying it if it weren't for the hefty price tag. Its hard, at least for me, to justify paying the extra money when I can get a S90ES which is similiar. Now if they do a 76 key version and its cheaper.....

I use compressors carefully to cut better when playing soft. More often than not, playing softly drowns you out and playing hard may sound plain wrong. With a compressor, I can play soft with a soft sound and still be heard. In my experience, with a dynamic instrument like a piano or a Hammond you can hear whether you are playing soft/quiet or hard/loud from the tonal quality. It's also easier to make a solo bite with a little compression... I usually don't program synth leads with lots of velocity modulation, so for me it's not really as useful, but if you play synth bass, a little compression can give you a little more punch and compensate for the classic va bass dip when there's lots of resonance involved.

I see how you'd use it for cutting through when playing soft. I have used outboard compressors sometimes on synth leads to cut the shrillness off if the particular patch gets louder and more piercing on the higher registers.

What do you use the compressor for?
Another application is with the Rhodes samples; you can bring up those lower-velocity samples, yet still bark out those higher-velocity ones without knocking someone's drink out of their hand.

It's also useful with the Stage's delay as well. I've noticed times where, if I turn the delay down too low, it decays too fast for me; but a slight tweak higher makes it last too long. The compressor helps me find that "sweet spot" by allowing the delayed signal to stay alive a moment longer, but not too long.

Plus, you can compress the sound without the ever-knowledgeable FOH guy choking your output to death with his decade-old Alesis 3630 ...

"... cuz that's all I've ever needed, man, is this little guy ... oh yeah, and I've used all the other compressors, too, no doubt ... no candle, brother, no candle ..."
