David R
So I've been on a Brazilian music kick for the past 6 months or so, mainly the MPB and Tropicalia stuff (Jorge Ben, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso). Late in the summer I heard about Curumin from this MP3 blog . Young Brazilian multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter signed to Quannum Projects (DJ Shadow's record label, same label as Blackalicious). Figured it was worth some investigating. I finally picked up the record, Achados e Perdidos (Lost and Found), a few days ago. There's no incredible solos but there's a lot of keyboard textures. Juno bass is all over this record. And it's a really solid mix of funk, soul, hip-hop and Brazilian pop music of the past forty years. The only English track is a cover of Stevie's "You Haven't Done Nothin'" and it remains loyal to the spirit of the song without being a karaoke track. The second half of the record gets bogged down in dub delay and misguided turntablism, but it's still a very very good debut effort overall. There are derivative moments though: "Sertao Urbano" is a bit weak structurally and rips off Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves the Sunshine." If you're into any of the above influences (or even Manu Chao), I highly suggest this record. David R
I'm just going to bump this because it doesn't seem like a lot of people saw this. There IS a vocoder on the last track, but don't hold that against him. David My Site Nord Electro 5D, Novation Launchkey 61, Logic Pro X, Mainstage 3, lots of plugins, fingers, pencil, paper.
