Conversations with Musicians

Tony Bennett

Recommended Posts

Conversations like last night make we want to keep the new duo, a duo.

Chad:

Not to push, but I wouldnt mind playing in the band.

Tony:

Well we could use some auxiliary percussion and bass, but our project would have to come first

Chad 15 minutes later:

Um, Id like to play in the band

Tony:

Fantastic, but I dont want to deal with you calling around rearranging musicians because your double booked, we would have to be first priority.

Chad 30 minutes later:

So can I play in the band? You realize bands are just a big joke anyways?

Tony:

Yeah whatever, but I really like this project, the cd is going to be really really good and Im not going to let anyone screw with it, we would have to be firstand by the way horn sounds coming out of guitars suck ass (his current project).

Chad:

Horns coming out of guitars do suck.

Tick tock, Tick Tock

Chad:

can I play in the band?

Tony:

Well, Im too old to f*** around & Im having a really great time, this would have to come first.

Chad:

Gives me a puppy dog look as he waddles through the snow towards home.

Tony:

Stands for a while with a look of bewilderment while the falling snow gently caresses my movie star good looks.

Reminds me of White Men Can't Jump

You were listening but you weren't hearing.

When he asked for a glass of water you are not supposed to bring him water. Instead you are supposed to sympathize with his thirst.

Obviously this dude wants to play in a band. Sounds to me like you were pacifying him and not communicating back on a) why he wants a band and b) how you were going to make that happen.

Seems like all you did was give him a "That's nice but this duo thing is all that should matter".

What the deal is, is that he has other projects hes involved in. Ive been in situations where people are playing in multiple bands. You can loose out on playing some sweet gigs because your drummer is all ready booked with someone else. Id like him to play, hes great, but would need to quit his other gigs. Im not in a sharing mood this time around, been there, done that.

So, just hire him as a side guy once in a while?? Then your response could be, "Yeah, we could have you sit in from time to time. Here are some charts (or CDs or tapes or whatever). Give it a listen and the three of us could talk about how and where you'd fill in." Then you do a few rehearsals ...

If you book a date and specify it's three of you, and he confirms his availability, he is kinda obligated to play the date. If a date comes up, you call him, and he's not available, you can offer the venue, "yes that date works, but we will be a duo."
