In response to the following questions: 1. The best gear in your studio? YOUR EARS! 2. What kind of pick do you use? (my fave post of all time!) A fossilized mammoth tusk filed and honed, and available for $59.99...but it'll last forever..... (well unless you lose it....but we never lose picks!) 3. RNC vs Avalon? (usually responded by the guy who owns 10 of each...supposedly) Avalon hands down....well at least Sting liked it the last time he was in MY studio. 4. Opinions on the Fender Pro Jr? Man that amp sucks, buy a Victoria! Of course this is all in jest....but you get the picture....any more nuggets from the peanut gallery???????

Its entertaining for sure. Watching a mic pre post turn into a religeous or political or a debate on corporate crap. The old "Use your ears" thing always gets a chuckle from me. Whether its right or not...still funny. :)

- Who's your favorite bassist, etc.? Me! - What kind of gear do you use? Uh, I forgot. - What can we do about taxes, corporate accountability, war in Iraq, blahblahblah? Address all that shit to a political forum and talk about music.

1. blah blah blah Football? I don't care. 2. blah blah blah Basketball? I don't care. 3. blah blah blah Baseball? I don't care. 4. blah blah blah Hockey? I don't care. 5. blah blah blah Soccer? I don't care. Glad everyone else has so much fun with it all - guess I just wasn't born with the Sports gene.

For me, it's the "How does (insert big name here) get his tone?" Answer "His hands". This is equivalent to the "What's the best piece of equipment in your studio?" "Your ears". While each is true to a measurable degree...the answer assumes idiocy or being a novice on the part of the answer, and is generally insulting. The asker of each question is really asking "what piece of equipment will add that extra sparkle to my mixes, assuming all things equal" or better yet, "How do I maximize my output from said piece of equipment?" The other ones that piss me off are the ones that go like: "Such and such a world leader is an asshole" (Response): "Well, if you knew about starving monkeys in the rainforest of Burma (an area which has nothing to do with said world leader) you'd be 100 percent on his side".

Sarcasm. I love it. 1) What's the best bass? Or its infinite variations. "Brand X versus Brand Y - which is better?" - The best one is the one that gives you the sound your ears and your mind hear. 2) What's the best set of strings? See above. 3) Who's the best bass/keyboard player/audio engineer? Player so-and-so kick so-and-so's behind. Sheesh! Ad nauseam - bleech... I like comparisons of features and let the person who is seeking the comparison make up their own mind. After all its personal preference anyway. I know this thread was started in jest but jeeze sometimes the signal-to-noise ratio is way up there. Not that I mind giving help or getting help ... ah maybe I'm getting crotchety in my old(er) age Never mind .... :D

Although I can understand hearing the same questions over and over can be tiring for some of you, I feel for newbies because I'm still kinda one myself. It wasn't too long ago that I was asking the "dumb questions" and I probably still will. I'm just glad I found the MP forums fairly early on as a newbie. You folks in general have been a lot more helpful and tolerant of newbie questions than other forums I've encountered. There is another forum (which I will not name) that I thought could be helpful but I felt they weren't as tolerant to newbies. I don't go there anymore except to their newbies section (did I just give a hint?) and try to help out there. I would like to take this opportunity, actually, to thank rog951 and where02190 who I remember being helpful early on in my MP experience. Actually, Coaster was also helpful but I wasn't listening. :p Coaster's suggestions was basically "Fix what you don't like in you mix with the gear you already have" which makes good sense now. But as a newbie, that concept was hard to understand and I guess it was easier to believe newer gear would fix your problems. Come to think of it, us newbies are pretty dumb, but we are so clueless we can't help it. Ooops. I thought I had a point when I started posting. Now I'm not sure. Didn't mean to "rant".

(1) What's the best mic preamp? If your singer were any good, it wouldn't matter, and if you're not in a well-tuned room, it doesn't matter anyway. (2) Which bass is better? Brand X or Brand Y? Gee, I don't know, but I'll bet that if hand either model to Marcus Miller, it will sound great. (3) My band doesn't get along. What should I do? Find a new band. (4) I want to improve on my instrument. What should I do? Take lessons. (5) I want to improve on my instrument, but I have some lame excuse about not being able to take lessons. What should I do? Take lessons. (6) Know where I can find the lyrics/TAB to song X?[\b] google (7) I've never posted here before, but I just released an album/invented a new product. Would you like to check it out? Two words: press release. (8) Should I upgrade to 192k? Perhaps, but only if you can make 44.1 sound as good as a commercial CD. Otherwise, you're just wasting money and disk space. (9) Anyone here into ( insert undergound fringe genre here ) ? Have you seen any POSTS about ( insert underground fringe genre here ) ? (10) Why does the music industry suck? Obviously because they haven't had the common sense to sign YOU yet. ;)

It's the equipment posts that get to me. What with assuming we ALL have SOOOO much money, we have nothing better to do but buy six different amps, 12 guitars, eight mixers, 14 phasers, entire home recording studio set-ups, AND know all the circuitry of each and every one like the backs of our hands! Either that, or some people are reading an AWFUL lot of magazine reviews! Whitefang
I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!

We all were newbies at one time or another and will continue to be in one area or another. I think this bunch is pretty tolerant and helpful. If its anti-anything around here its anti-spam, anti-juvenille and maybe anti-assine.

Over a year ago, we had a long thread going about the merits and techniques of boiling bass strings and which famous bassists do it. It took a turn for the better when one guy said he just boils the whole bass. Any time string boiling comes up now, we get cooking recipes instead of a way-to-serious discussion. Tom

I boil my Laklands right in the bathtub. :D DISCLAIMER - Just in case you're a total idiot and think I'm serious, this is a JOKE. Do NOT submerge your bass or anyone else's in the bathtub. ;)
