whitefang Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 Last night, my wife was channel surfing and stopped long enough on the "Style Channel" for us to get a laugh out of the way models walk down a runway. Ever notice that? Several of them would plant the left foot down where the right foot should go, and the right where the left would. Criss-crossing that like that all the way down the stage. Looks goofy as hell, and really isn't what you'd call a flattering gait. So, what's up with that, anyway? It's enough for me that the CLOTHES are a joke! Why make it worse with that walk? And why-oh-why do they all look so pissed off? I'd be smiling if I made what they do an hour! Can anyone 'splain this? Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
Midimonk Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 They are are hungry,an old friend of mine was a model(no one famous) and she said that most just smoke and drink all day. They fight so hard to be skeleton's,it's just not right, to get those big $$$'s.That industry is just plain vicious. monk I cannot be bought, and I cannot be threatened. But if you put them both together then I'm your man!"
BNC Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 I too never understood the fashion show. Like you said, the clothes are freaking circus costumes. I thought they smoked, drank, fought, binged, and then purged all day  , but hey, what do I know about fashion (if its clean, its good) :D

I have/had a friend who ended up being a model for "a very elite agency". She went off around the world, appeared on numerous magazine covers, some MTV videos, came back. I said "had" because now she's a mental wreck. She came back - and a few other personas as well. It was incredibly sad because she was a smart, outspoken person and now she's "not really here", and seems to be getting worse. Freaking incredibly sad, I don't know .... how to help her, I suppose there isn't anything that can be done to reverse things, but - it definitely messed up/ruined her life, I don't know where the money went, apparently her parents have gone broke trying to help her and now she's like a shadow of her former self. She's "there" but sometimes she isn't. They sucked the soul out of her.
One of my old girlfriends was a model, and I asked her the same question. They are taught to walk that way. Crossing one foot over the other create's an added sway to the hip. Yeah it looks goofy, but whose looking at their feet? :D Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"

phaeton Posted January 16, 2003 Posted January 16, 2003 While i'll also agree that the clothing they wear is usually quite far-out.... I've wondered... Do any of these clothes actually make it into some form of production? I mean, do some overly wealthy, and `overly cultured' women somewhere that i never happen to come across actually buy such a dress for $10K and wear it? And like it? Or is it all just a high-dollar form of entertainment for disgustingly wealthy people trying to bury thier extreme unhappiness by putting on a front? Is it basically like going to see a play? Or an auto show featuring only concept cars- where you might see a few cosmetic design elements make it to a production car, but for the most part the cars are a design for the sake of design and imagination. whitefang Posted January 17, 2003 Author Posted January 17, 2003 I noticed their feet, jotown, in an effort to discern why such skinny gals were walking like drunken elephants! The show we were watching also helped dispell the myth that to be a fashion model, one had to be pretty. Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
Skip_dup1 Posted January 17, 2003 Posted January 17, 2003 I`ve known several people in that biz-it crosses into the film/T.V. arena regularly. The record labels often cherry pick-find a model that has half a voice and you have a star. The skinny frame allows the clothing to hang a certain way when the models move-it emphasizes the cut of the garment. The walk accentuates it also. Designers, especially those based in Europe, have a different idea of clothing that most Americans. They make a certain number of pieces out of a collection that are not meant to be practical at all-they are strictly artistic statements. I mean, if you stick to things that people would wear to the supermarket, a show would get dull pretty darn quick. There are a lot of haute-couture things that would only be worn to a certain event, maybe only once. They may go through many owners.
whitefang Posted January 17, 2003 Author Posted January 17, 2003 I'm not sure if you got my point or not, skip. MY point is that while, as you claim, the goofy walk is meant to accentuate the cut of the garment, it mearly comes off as a goofy walk with no relation to attractiveness at all. It seems like you're trying to tell me that I don't get it, but it is really THEY who don't get it! One in that business might pass me off as someone who doesn't understand the biz, while my way of thinking says that anyone who claims all that is accomplishing what they claim has been bamboozled into believing it so. As for the clothes being "artistic expression"? Let them put them duds in a museum! Whitefang I started out with NOTHING...and I still have most of it left!
Skip_dup1 Posted January 17, 2003 Posted January 17, 2003 whitefang- No, I`m not saying you don`t get it. I don`t take it any more seriously than you do. Frankly, except for a few people in that business than I`ve known personally, they strike me as a bunch of assholes. Your wife probably watched it for longer than I`m able to. I`m just saying there`s a purpose for them doing what they do. Anyway, have you seen they way male models walk? there`s really no walk for them. They always look like they were trying to find the toilet and went through the wrong door.
