Henchman\'s mix - Click here. That one was definitely a REMIX. Craig sent me a mix, but I'm not sure if he wants it posted yet! I think it's probably ok, but I'd like to see if he has any caveats...

I vote for constructive criticism. What I plan on doing is first comment on what I like and then comment on what can be improved. What would make comments even more constructive are suggestions on how to make the improvement. My $.02. edited <--- It's me, riffing. I decided to go by my first name since I wanted to use my new studio logo, which has my name anyway, and I actually like being called by Rim instead of riffing. I didn't know it would update this quickly.

I prefer honest critiques, since that's the only way we are going to learn something here, and that is my goal at least. As long as everyone is respectful about it there shouldn't be a problem, right? However, I do think that people should not post their comments anonymously. Especially people who post threatening PMs anonymously and might like to use this as another opportunity to attack someone

I'm in for brutal honesty too. I would like to hear what people don't like about my mix just as much as what they do like. All my friends here said that the mix sounds great. That doesn't do me a whole helluva lotta good, except inflate my ego. Lemme have it!

I'm also very interested in hearing about the equipment everyone used to do their mix. Anyone care to share? The equipment I used was: Mackie D8B (V3) MFX cards for one reverb, one stereo delay and one mono delay Mackie HDR Mackie HR824's That's it!

OK, I've now come to the conclusion that you all have my posts blocked. You can't even see what I'm posting, can you? BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH-BLAH!!! You didn't even hear that, did you? Wow. What did I do? Was my hangnail story THAT bad???

OK y'all, I've updated my mix (link is the same), I did go ahead and strap a limiter on WITHIN REASON :D ... now I don't feel so inferior in the volume wars... :p Anyhow, yeah, it seems like most people want constructive criticism. I'm probably going to hold off on most of that until I have a CD in hand... MP3's don't always tell the real story. Probably have a few comments here and there about arrangements and such.

Just some initial impressions: Bunny, really loved how you got the kick and snare sound to stand out! Sal, I like how your mix builds up after the first verse! The snare seems off to the right which was a little disconcerting. Ken/Eleven Shadows, I like how made it sound more techno! Although I wonder if the vox would sound better with more reverb. I'll try to comment on others. What's the official procedure we decided on? I think at what time we were gonna split into groups so no one has to comment on everyone's mix but it also guaranteed that at least some people will comment on everyone's mix. A lot of good stuff out there, though! It is pretty cool to hear the same song being treated so differently. It's like we took GT3's kid and we all dressed him/her up so differently.

I did everything in the Yamaha AW4416. Kind of made it an exercise for this mix not to use any outboard stuff just to see what I could do with it. Monitors are KRK V8's. That's about it! In fact, even when Eskil and I did the drum tracks I only used the pre's in the Yamaha.

I'm all for polite brutal honesty/constructive criticism. Hey, Bunny I thought you were posting my mix in this thread last night - wazzup? Like Lee Im woking on an aw4416.I ended up going for a sound that a live band could reproduce sans extensive technology support. I emphasized the guitars over the synths. I mixed in some sampled drums and a little EMU KS32 synth part in the intro. I ducked a channel with the low-low bass freq's with a sidechain from my sampled kick. Used another bass channel for the bass freq's above that. Used boss SE50and 70 boxes for some heavily effected delay on the count-in vox and a flange on my synth. Used a finalizer to comp the stereo bus. Used the AW on-board EQ on the tracks and a little of its comping on the bass ( I was too lazy to do a major re-patching job and I was pleasantly surprised). I did very little to the vox- just a touch of reverb/delay and some timing adjustments. I sped the whole thing up 3.8% to match the driving rock style I was after. GT care to share what you used to get the guitar tones? Some of em are outside the range I can get to today.

Some reactions: Sounscape: Loved the feel you created. Acoustic gtr sounds real warm and comfy. Great inerplay with the synth bass sound. I was not really fond of the arpeggio synth tracks tah GT provided - esp. around 1:07 it seemed to fight the feel. Panning the snare to one side bothered me a bit. Vocal effect change around 2:20 real nice effect - but hard panning the vox when it sounded essentially the same as the main seemed artificial. Loved the synth sound introduced around 3:00 While I loved the feel you created I also felt the vocal was not done with this in mind. A new vocal track that focused more on this feel would have made it a better fit IMHO. Loved the overall sound management. ------ Lee, Overall good sounding mix I liked it - The overall dynamics might have been a bit more grabby somehow - cant put my finger on it. Eskils drums tracks are strong- first time Ive heard them. Nice vox delay effect explosion at the end of the intro. Drums a wee bit heavy in the mix(what a surprise :D ) Snare might have had a bit more bite to it- and seemed jsut a bit on the dry side. ( tho this is just an MP3 thru my computer speakers) I did not like the arpeggio synth part - but like the panning treatment you gave it around 1:50+ The guitar/ synth mutes around 2:20 seemed a bit messy. I struggled with this in my mix as well. I left less of the sloppiness in before the mute cut in than you did. Were those backwards guitars at the end- Love em. Did you do that on the AW somehow? Good stuff. ------- Feel free to be honest with me. No pain no gain. More reactions later( if Im gonna really listen I can only do so much at once)
