Need a B3

Recommended Posts

Bear with me, I'm new to this... have a Motif 8, looking for a 2nd keyboard with good B3s, clav, wurlitzer, etc. without hammer effect keys (more akin to organ) Not worried about sequencer, and numerous bells and whistles. From reading previous posts, the Nord and CX3 are the best bets. Any thoughts or suggestions without having to go straight to a Hammond?

From your description, you want the Nord. It has great B3, wonderful wurli and stellar clav. Great effects with an old school vibe that you can turn off and on with dedicated switches.

The Nord does not have authentic drawbars, which is an issue to some serious B3 aficianados. The only other drawback is that it is not multitimbral - you can't play organ and piano at the same time.

The CX3 has very good B3 too, but that's all - no pianos.

Agreed with what Moe posted. If you're truly critical of a good clav and Wurli in the same board as an authentic Hammond, then the Nord Electro is the only true choice for you.

Clonk here for the Nord website (although I'm sure you already know where it is... but I'm feeling extra-helpful today. ;) )

Another post to say the same thing -- if you need clavs and wurlies in addition to Hammond, then you absolutely want the Nord Electro.

I gig with one. I miss real drawbars a lot. But the feel of the keys is awesome, and somehow it just seems more like a "real instrument" than any other synth-like keyboard I've ever owned.

Your Motif 8 is generally considered to be one of the more authentic instruments for "clav, wurlitzer, etc.", in both sound and feel.

Not too sure why you'd want an organ/synth type of keyboard for those.

However, in addition to the highly-touted Electro

there is also:

the Roland VK-8

and the Roland V-Combo (VR-760)

For straight-out B-3 there's

the Hammond XK-3

and the Korg CX-3

Also, an inexpensive surprise could be:

the Casio WK3700

Well, there's a bunch of pictures of keyboards, but... as much as I love my Motif ES7, I have to say I feel a more 'authentic' vibe from the Electro for both Clav and Wurli parts. YMMV, of course.

I also own a VK8, but didn't bother suggesting it, because of the aforementioned requirement for 'authentic clav & wurli' the original poster wanted. Same goes for all the others Jeep suggested. The CX3 and XK3 are both wonderful tonewheel emulations, but have none of the other requirements.

Cheers,

SG

A refresh of the pertinent portion of the original post seems to be in order, here.

Important to note: keyboard, clav, wurlitzer.

LOL... well, given that the Voce, Korg, Hammond and Roland are all without the Clav and Wurli, and the Voce is a module, I'd say it was pretty clear-cut, no?

Just trying to keep the thread on focus... we've got plenty of "my clonewheel's better than your clonewheel" threads in this forum as it is. :thu:

Absolutely, Tom... just making sure we don't miss out on the original criteria along the way. ;)

The V5 is a great box, when it's played through a real rotary. I never got a chance to try the Spin II sim, but the original Spin left me cold. Haven't yet laid hands on any of the other outboard Leslie sims out there.

Have you got one of these in your rig?

But seriously, did the original poster buy an Electro yet? And, if not, what are you waiting for!!!!????

Hey, sqrblk !

This was your first post in our Keyboard Corner forum, so welcome aboard. :)

We strive to give timely and appropriate advice, so please tune back in here, buddy,

and help us to help you out by giving us some feedback.

Musically, where are you coming from?

Clue us in as to what you're trying to do, and perhaps, why.

The Nord Electro is certainly regarded as

an excellent instrument and a front-running contender,

but it sure as hell isn't the only way to satisfy your title request: "NEED A B3"

Your desire for a board "without hammer effect keys (more akin to organ)"

led me to suggest checking out the Rolands too,

which are also capable of " (B3s,) clav, wurlitzer, etc."

The Motif 8 you already own is very competent at these sounds,

so the addition of a Korg, Hammond XK, or an Electro would

seemingly satisfy the fact that you "NEED A B3".

(And, at $400, with reasonably legit Hammond tones, that Casio is sick.)
