DAWs and system failures.

I have found the comments on this site really helpful, so I am going to post a few more questions - hope you don't mind ;) I would like to hear you thoughts on computer based DAWs reliability. We are continuing rely on them more and more but are they reliable enough? Do you experience a lot of software and hardware failures? What are the main problems you encounter? Have you lost more time with failing computers than you lost with dedicated equipment. Please feel free to tell me about anything that has resulted in computer downtime (be it hardware or software). Horror stories more than welcome ;)

With disc based recording, making backups is essential. Actually, with recording in any format, backups are essential. Catastrophies can happen with any medium. DAW's are probably more reliable than tape based, traditional systems, as you don't have to align/clean the heads. Splicing songs together is inifinatly easier on computers. Disc failures do happen. But using proper backups will ease the pain of loosing data of any sort.

Thanks for that. Do you find that you often encounter software conflicts within your set up and does your system crash very often :)

So do you feel that building a system yourself or having one custom built is the only way to ensure you get a stable system? [img]http://img4.ranchoweb.com/images/empale/1.314809529.lily.jpg[/img]

Can a DAW be trusted for professional recordings? Sure. Would I use one for live recordings? No way! Some tasks require as close 100% reliability & stability as we possibly can get and no DAW is quite there yet. And as previously mentioned, backup is mandatory. Same goes for a finely tuned OS. [/b] [/quote]I suppose that when you say "system", you are reffering to the hardware? If so, as far as DAW's are concerned, I'm exclusively using Mac's. Except for some specialized hardware that the user adds, Mac's are never custom built. The noble art of handling software conflicts has to be mastered regardless of platform. /Mats

Emma, I certainly feel that a computer built and designed for use as a DAW by it's owner is the best way to go. Advantages: 1.Components are hand picked and upgradeable. 2.Installation of OS/Software can be set-up properly then "ghosted" as b/u. 3.Extremely cost-effective. Disadvantages: 1.Research can be time consuming and what works for 1 person may not for another. 2.Intimidation factor, building a pc isn't hard but can be overwhelming for a newbie. 3.Your basically your own tech support but w/ forums and a few good questions you can get by wonderfully. Best of all, the pc is hand crafted and custom built :thu: monk

Emma - hit return before adding the img tag & it will appear on the next line. The reply box does its own word wrapping that doesn't actually appear in the post itself. ;)

It appears not - I know this is a stupid question, but where do I put the image URL? Thanks, Emma :freak:
