Midimonk Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 I normally listen to industrial/goth/and death metal with occasional old school country (Patsy Cline,Hank Williams...etc) :freak: Then my roommate puts one of those 80's retro cd's in the player and all of sudden i realize how much i miss the 80's. anyone else feel like this? I cannot be bought, and I cannot be threatened. But if you put them both together then I'm your man!"

Tedster Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 I'm with Khan DeVille. My thing is psychedelic music, Brit Invasion stuff, and Stax, Motown, and Philly soul. I, personally, don't miss the 80s at all. But, that's me... "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"

Midimonk Posted January 15, 2003 Author Posted January 15, 2003 i don't know why i like the 80's for the most part they were a blur(bad habits back then).Maybe i'm experiencing my mid-life crisis,oh well lets see who else responds. Monk BTW Gus thoses tunes of yours are really well done. :thu: I cannot be bought, and I cannot be threatened. But if you put them both together then I'm your man!"
Jeebus Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 It's not a mid-life crisis. I'm a young man and I feel the same way sometimes. There was a lot of garbage in the 80's, but there was some great music as well. Some of the late 80's depeche mode really brings back memories.
Henchman Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Because they wrote real songs with catchy melodies. Skip_dup1 Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 It`s weird-a lot of electronic-oriented people whine about guitar music. Well the electronic scene had almost a whole decade to itself-the 80s. The results speak for themselves. Personally I liked a fair amount of it-I get tired of flat-footed rockers sometimes. 80s music moved-that`s what I like about it.

Lee Flier Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 I never liked much 80's synthpop, with a few exceptions. Sparks were kind of cool, anybody remember them? I much preferred power pop in the 80's - ya know, the Plimsouls, Cheap Trick, Squeeze, Costello, Blondie, Nick Lowe, early Tom Petty. Throw early U2 and REM in there too. But yeah, there certainly was more of an emphasis on songwriting and melody no matter how you slice it.

doc taz Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Actually, I like some of the 80s synth pop. There's lots of hummable melodies in that music for me (as opposed to the techno that came later in the 90s). My fave group from that period of synth pop has to be the Pet Shop Boys. Great songs. Until I knew who they really were, I never realized that there were only two fellas in the group. Hahahah:D...to think, later on (early 90s), I became obsessed with music that featured hyper-saturated guitars, turbocharged beats, and the infamous "Cookie Monster" vocal style. What else... It's not 'cool' to like the 80's yet. But here's the thing I protest is the use of the term "retro" with the terms "80's". The 80's haven't happened yet! What you saw 20 years ago (yes, it's been about that long) was a time-warp, man! I can never look back on the 80's. I can only look forward. I loved the freshness of it. New sounds, new approaches to music. Lot's of indie stuff going on! We are poised for another music revolution... Something HAS to happen to break this stagnant crop of music we are currently being subjected to. I thought the 80's were great minus that late 80's glam-metal thing. I preferred more of the synth oriented stuff. Super 8 Hear my stuff here
Lee Flier Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 It's not cool to like the 80's? Around here it seems like there's a full on 80's revival starting up. All of a sudden I'm hearing all kinds of crap on the radio that I frankly wanted to forget. :D In fact I'm petrified now that I'm going to show up for a session someplace and somebody is going to ask me to do the Phil Collins gated reverb sound... at which point I will probably throw myself through the control room glass... :D
Midimonk Posted January 15, 2003 Author Posted January 15, 2003 i hate the term retro too,it was just theres an 80's type party going on next door and it's invaded my adobe. As far as todays lame excuse for music well it will pass soon, once the daws take over and they come up with a christina aguilara plug-in. :thu: I cannot be bought, and I cannot be threatened. Great Songwriting, many of their songs had arrangements that were typically for Rock. "Never let me down again" is a Rock song in its essence. I think the smashing pumpkins covered it once on a tribute album. "Ya gots to work with what you gots to work with". - Stevie Wonder

jschmidt Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Well the 80s were great. I have this one CD that is "Entertainment Weeklys Hits of 1984" (or something like that) Here are some of the songs on it: Karma Chameleon - Boy George and Culture Club Here Comes the Rain Again - Eurythmics Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins Missing You - John Waite Drive - The Cars Sunglasses At Night - Corey Hart Out Of Touch - Hall & Oates Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr. Caribbean Queen - Billy Ocean Cruel Summer - BananaRama 99 Luft Balloons - Nena Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper * Other than the Ghostbusters song... this CD rocks! Take the best hits of 2002.... can that music even compare to these best hits of 1984? I think not. :)

I play both, but that's just me.
