Makes you kinda wish you'd kept yours and never took it out of the box ... yeah like that would have happened.

There is nothing about either of these pictures that proves to me that there is a Rhodes in that box.

In fact, the top edge with the aluminum extrusions looks very un-Rhodes like to me, unless it's a very late model that I've never seen.

No, it does look like a Mark V to me. Mark Vs are excellent instruments. They weigh about 100lbs and contain many real improvements over the earlier models. I have three Rhodes right now, one is a Mark V and it's my favorite.

i bought my never gigged suitcase mark 1 for $200. Still had the price tag on it. Was a backup unit for the moody blues, never played moved. The action is very smooth. The seller was not concerned with totally ripping me off. Some people its not about the money......

This is from Speakeasy (Steve Hayes) who is a reputable dealer IMO. If I was in the market for a $12000 Rhodes I would feel safe purchasing it from Steve. Of course I might prefer to buy a $2000 Rhodes from someone without his good reputation. A lot of us have done busines with Steve as he makes incredible preamps for clonewheels , Rhodes, and others. He also reconditions Rhodes, Leslies, B3s etc. IMO With Steve you get what you pay for... but he is also a salesman. I haven't always opted to go with his suggestions. But I would not doubt that it is what he says.

So he thinks his reputation is worth 10k ;)

Yeah, one happy salesman and one happy nut. ;)

But for sure, he's free to try to get any price he can. Might be a good tactic to just keep listing it and wait for that kind of nut that wants a vintage unit with that new-car smell.

I use the term "nut" liberally. It applies to most of us at one time or another. To some of us more often than others ...

IMO the above comment makes no sense! How is someone "ripping you off" by charging whatever they choose for an item? It's not being the only store in town, and selling milk to orphans for 50 dollars a gallon! Unless he put a pistol to your head and made you open your checkbook, you choose to buy the thing.

Basic economics: something is WORTH what someone else is willing to PAY. I agree 12 thousand bucks is a lot for a Rhodes -- but hey, that's a fair price -- how many in the box, never gigged Rhodes exist in the world? Maybe there are only 3 or 4??? Maybe 12k is not enough to ask ;-)

Let's say that if it does sell for 12K. Who here if they happen to be sitting on another one wouldn't attempt to get at least that much?

I absolutely agree with Ed's comments. The market will drive the selling price. That's true for vintage collector stuff as well as new mega wonder work stations. I believe we call someone a "nut" for spending this because we put our self in the buyer's position witrh our own needs, desires, values and financial situation. Would Stevie Wonder or (name your own favorite mega bucks Rhodes appreciator) be "nuts" for spending this much on this Rhodes? I think someone's "nuts" for spending 50K + on a BMW (not really). I could buy an 18K Camry(which I did) and some damn nice equipment for that including this Rhodes. I don't happen to appreciate a mint Rhodes enough to do that but a B3/122 or Steinway(for a lot more) might be a different story. Is spending $5000-$10000 on a week cruise more sane where all you have is the memory after the end of that week?

It's certainly more acceptable.

Like someone mentioned in other recent posts there's a lot of hostile tone on this forums lately. Perhaps choose your words more carefully - you might be insulting someone you don't really mean to insult - ya nut ;):D .

Well, not to add any fuel to the fire but I think Speakeasy have always charged a lot, and I say that as a previous customer. Sure that no one is forcing anyone to buy anything, but $12,000 is at least 5 times too much.

I guess this really is a boutique times 10 kind of item... if it was the mega rare MIDI version (which Chick and I believ Steve Woodyard own) it might be worth a quarter of the price.

The irony is that if someone were to buy this at $12,000 they would have to keep it boxed up in order for it to retain any where near that value. As soon as it's out of the box, it's uniqueness is gone and it's just a MINT Rhodes--worth a fraction of the $12K.

Why is it so important that an instrument hasn't been played? I've got a MINT (and I MINT) Rhodes in storage. Never been gigged, that's for sure. There is one slight mark on it. No deep scratches or rust. Problem is, it's a plastic action. I paid about $300 for it and that's about what it's worth (because it's a plastic action).

Personally, if I had $12k as spare cash, I'd go for it. Then again, I'd probably sell my mom-in law for any Rhodes - just kidding ;) . Come to think of it, anybody heard this one:

What's a great example of mixed feelings?

Watching your mother-in-law drive your new BMW over a cliff :D !

To be honest, when I see something silly like this, it makes me lose respect for the person trying to sell their things. Reminds me of some doddering dear old lady who places an ad for her mint M3 for $2000, runs for two years because she "won't take a penny less than it's worth."

I hope someone buys this thing, just so I won't suffer profound embarassment for the seller when I encounter this one again in about five months on e-bay.

Nothing inherently wrong with giving it the old college try, though -- points for following through and sticking to it and all that.
