DJDM Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Found this over on Reason Station where everyone is in a titter over it. The link goes to an article on a site called Stream Works Audio. I can't say anything about the source as I have never heard of them (although some of you may have). Looks to me like a program designed specifically to kill off Reason... interesting.
http://www.streamworksaudio.com/news.php Cakewalk Announces Project5 Soft Synth Workstation 10.01.2003 A complete, open-platform, virtual studio environment; combining a suite of professional soft synth instruments, samplers, pattern-based sequencing and editing tools, automatable effects, ACID-format loop editing live mixing, more Anaheim, CA, Winter NAMM Booth 6800, (January 16, 2003) Cakewalk, developer of the leading music and sound software for Windows, today announced the Project5 soft synth workstation, offering a complete suite of synthesizers, samplers, sequencers, audio and MIDI effects, and audio looping tools in an integrated studio environment. Project5 also allows musicians to customize and expand their software studio with support for additional soft synths, audio and MIDI effects, sample formats, and any Windows-compatible audio hardware. Project5 has a $429 MSRP U.S. and is scheduled for release in March 2003. Project5 goes beyond stand-alone soft-synth rack software by providing a complete, flexible production environment. It gives electronic musicians everything they need to experiment, create, and perform music using integrated sequencers, software synths, samplers, audio and MIDI effects, and audio looping tools. The Project5 soft synth workstation includes a polyphonic analog-modeling synth, professional sampler, drum synthesizer, sampling drum machine, and a groove sampler. The Project5 sequencers allow real-time and step-recording, as well as piano-roll style editing and step sequencing. Project5 also provides advanced capabilities for synth layering, keyboard mapping, real-time pattern triggering, an intuitive live-performance audio engine, and ACID-compatible loop support. Project5 breaks significant new ground in music software, commented Michael Hoover, VP of product marketing for Cakewalk. There is no other product available today that offers a more complete, more flexible, or more creative environment for sequencing, sampling, and software synthesis. Cakewalk has combined its industry-leading sequencing expertise with advanced soft synth and sampling technology. And with support for multiple plug-in and sample formats, Project5 provides an infinitely expandable studio for the ultimate experience in music creation and experimentation. DJDM Posted January 15, 2003 Author Posted January 15, 2003
Originally posted by GusTraX: ... and do YOU think it may kill our baby? ;) Looks interesting, I agree...
Well the deciding factors for me would be: 1) Routing capabilities. Reason excels at this with an almost unlimited set of possibilities in that category 2) CPU load. Reason is so light that I can produce an almost unlimited rack and never have a problem. Project5 may be a little heavier but who know? Just have to wait and see. :) - DJDM DJDM.com
Jotown Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 It does look interesting. Do you know if they are offering discounts to Sonar/Cakewalk users? Jotown:) "It's all good: Except when it's Great"

Cakewalk.com barely acknowledges that it exists on their site... Nope. I have no idea. - DJDM DJDM.com
Alndln Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Looks nice, but I'd trade it all for an I/O plugin. "A Robot Playing Trumpet Blows"
pbognar Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 This looks really cool, but I wish they would have folded it into Sonar El Grande. I would miss linear audio recording, staff editting, etc. I hope another announcement from Cakewalk would be the addition of ASIO and native VST support to Sonar and also the ability to include some of these new Project5 components into Sonar. Pete
Wewus432 Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Ooops, I didn't see this thread or I wouldn't have started another one about Project5. I wouldn't count on too many parts of Project5 being included with Sonar. I'm sure they're hoping people like you will rewire Project5 into Sonar instead of rewiring Reason into Sonar.
Shayne White Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 Well, I think it looks more like an Orion Platinum killer than a Reason killer. There's no mention of rack cabling like in Reason, and it doesn't have some of the stuff that Reason does. It looks neat, but it might be more constricting in terms of routing capabilities. DXi and VSTi hosting and advanced MIDI routing seems more like Orion platinum to me, with the addition of a sequencer. Well, we may find out more details tomorrow. Jotown Posted January 19, 2003 Posted January 19, 2003 Yes Chaz, you are right. I got an E-mail from Cakewalk yesterday. They will be offering some kind of deal to all registered Sonar owners, as well as some kind of bundle to those upgrading to Sonar 2.2 from an earlier version of the program. Mark LaCoste Posted January 19, 2003 Posted January 19, 2003 Still thinking "What is it for?"... I s'pose some of you guys use a *lot* of synths. I can't imagine needing it. Heck, if I had the money to spend I could buy that Lounge Lizard Electric piano, a real good B3 emulator, a good piano soundfont, and be cruisin! For once, there's not even a little stirring in the part of my brain that does gear lust. -ml Rubber Lizard Studio
