I finally decided on my piano sound.

Geezzzz. What an ordeal. I've been trying to decide for over a year. Ivory PC, a GigaStudio piano, Roland RD700SX or the SRX-11 for my XV5080, Yamaha SP90ES or the newer piano card for my Motif. (Almost bought that one.) Choices are endless and my ability to try sounds side by side is limited.

I finally picked up Post Musical Instruments - Piano Magic in the half price group buy. Old Lady, Emperor, Bosendorfer 290, Steinway D, C7, Estonia and more. 15 Gigs. That should do me a while. I settled on Kontakt format but picked up GigaStudio cross grades for the Steinway D and Bosendorfer 290.

No more worrying about which ROMpler has the best piano, and with the group buy and package deal it cost me about the same as an expansion ROM. :)

Congratulations on your purchase! I already own the Old Lady and the Emperor and they sound beautiful when playing solo jazz/classical type things but they are too wet to use in a pop track. I'm trying to decide whether to pick up the PMI C7 or just take the plunge and buy Ivory (and more Ram, another hard drive etc.)

How does the C7 sound to you?

thanks, JP

Yeah thanks kevank. I'm aware of that. Just trying to make the right choice. The PMI C7, or their Bundle with the Bos 290. the Steinway D and the C7, or just go with the Ivory.

Sure wish i could play them all. Decisions, decisions....

I cannot really give you a experienced answer yet. I mostly listened to the main four before ordering. The group buy ends Friday, November 11 and the order will be mailed out after that so it will be a while before I get to try them all out. It will be nice to have a collection.

jimmymio your post helped me a lot, thanks.

been agonising about buying the old lady but all the demos sound too wet for my tastes and I wasn't sure if those were the raw samples or people adding IR reverbs or other reverbs to the sound.

thanks

I don't feel like starting a poll but it would be interesting to learn where everyone gets their piano sounds - sampler, laptop, stage piano or rompler. (I left out an acoustic piano, but that goes without saying.)

No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message.

In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.

That is why I went for the package. I can use Emperor and Old Lady when just playing for my own enjoyment. I can use the PMI Bosendorfer and Steinway D when recording parts where I don't want ambiance. With the package deal of having them all at once, plus the half price deal the entire group is only $225 plus shipping and credit card charge. That is the same as the Roland SRX-11. :D

I use a variety of piano samples. For grand pianos, there is the bosendorfer 290, galaxy steinway, old lady, Malmsjo (a favourite of mine).. when I need an upright piano sound, vintaudio's upright collection http://www.vintaudio.com/GUPC.htm .. is very clean sounding. On the whole I tend to use (like the malmsjo), the Schimmel Braunschweig Upright Piano for EXS24. It's far darker than any other upright piano sample library I know of, similar to the malmsjo, which is my preference. Check out the demos here http://www.stedeford.com/schimmelpiano.html (and yes I created it!)
