hardbop200
Hello everyone: I need help with finding some resources for jazz orchestration. I've been presented with a wonderful opportunity - there is a big band here in town that I have been playing piano in recently. They are a bunch of really, really nice band directors, some of whom were my teachers when I was in high school. Because they are so nice, they are willing to read through any charts I give them, so I need to get to writing! I am familiar with and have access to the basics of horn ranges and instrument transpositions, so I'm okay there. What I need is help with voicing chords for this band's particular instrumentation, specifically with the brass. (The band currently uses 5 saxes, three trumpets, and three tbones.) Does anyone have any websites that have sample big band scores, maybe something by Sammy Nestico, Frank Mantooth, or Nelson Riddle that I can look at to steal some band voicing principles? Or can you recommend a book that specifically addresses voicing chords and other techniques for big band? Thanks, Josh Josh
linwood
Sammy and Nelson both have books you can buy on Amazon. Sammy's even comes autographed.

David R
Rayburn Wright's "Inside the Score" analyzes charts by Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Sammy Nestico. Great stuff. There's also a Henry Mancini book on Amazon that's quite good. David My Site Nord Electro 5D, Novation Launchkey 61, Logic Pro X, Mainstage 3, lots of plugins, fingers, pencil, paper. Dave Horne
A friend of mine, Vince Corozine, has a new arranging book published by Mel Bay. I've worked with this guy a few times and played his charts; he's a sax player. I know nothing about his book except that it was recently published. Here's a link to his site ... Vince Corozine No guitarists were harmed during the making of this message. In general, harmonic complexity is inversely proportional to the ratio between chording and non-chording instruments.
