Botch. Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 The airplane was an ANA flight from a city in Japan to China. It happened at take-off, the plane returned to the airport, with no injuries, and no Boeing support was required, a person on the ground caught the pictures. http://lightning.pwr.eng.osaka-u.ac.jp/lrg/temp/plane.html  Botch "Eccentric language often is symptomatic of peculiar thinking" - George Will www.puddlestone.net
Charlie-brm Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Wow! that's cool. I hope the guy's camera is OK :) It's OK to tempt fate. Just don't drop your drawers and moon her.
Tedster Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 WOW!!! Way cool! Glad the plane is fine...but they usually are, and I don't believe that this is a rare occurrence. It's just rare to capture it on video. I'm forwarding that to everyone at work. Thanks... "Cisco Kid, was a friend of mine"
Kendrix Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Fascinating pics. I'll bet God did this cause they were trying to serve that baked ziti again. IN college i took a course from Kurt Vonneguts brother - who is a top internationally known expert on lightning. There are very many forms it takes and details of its ways remain largely a mystery. Fortunaltely, other than possible damage to the avionics, the ungrounded metal can that is an airplane is pretty safe in such circumstances. Rick K. Posted January 13, 2003 Posted January 13, 2003 Kinda like a huge conduit. Wow. Wonder if they had to manually land it after that? Rick

[/b][/quote]In some cases they do,in other cases they lose power and crash. There have been many documented cases of crashes due to lightning.Sometimes it's unavoidable, but pilots avoid these conditions as much as possible. These people aboard this plan were lucky,it couldv'e easily turned out another way. Philip OKeefe Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 Amazing pictures Botch. I'm glad there were no systems failures. Lucky flight.
Groovepusher Sly Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 I'd like to have seen the hairdoo's of the passengers as they left the plane. Sly  Whasineva ehaiz, ehissgot ta be Funky!
Soundcrafter Posted January 14, 2003 Posted January 14, 2003 Imagine what it would've sounded like for the passengers...not to mention look like...which would've been pretty blinding. "If you're flammable and have legs, you are never blocking a fire exit. Unless you are a table." -Mitch Hedberg
philbo_Tangent Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 This is one that was being sent around work about 3 - 4 years ago... It IS awesome. I work for a company that designs and builds avionics, and you wouldn't believe the amount of stuff that is added to allow rejecting lightning, external RF interference, and lots of other stuff. From what I've heard it is not at all unusual to have large air transport aircraft get hit by lightning, without the electronics even blinking... It may be very different for smaller stuff, though (like Cessna's or helicopters - I can't say from my own knowledge) Phil Tangent Studios http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Tangent2/
