eric
I just got the 11/2005 issue in the mail today and those darn Keyboard Mag editors have truly inspired a new level of GAS for me! They put my top two "want to buy" instruments in the same issue: 1) Nord STAGE 2) Yamaha S90ES I thought both reviews were excellent and very well balanced. I particularly enjoyed Ken Hughes' review of the STAGE and now I'm even more eager to play one! The magazine also has a fantastic article in memory of Bob Moog, including a cool timeline of Moog events and milestones (nice job to Ernie and Mark). Top it off with a Depeche Mode article and some other cool reviews and I'd say it is my favorite KB issue of the year! Great job, guys! Dick Ward MP Hall of Fame
Lol, love it. In that case, this forum is completely dangerous for those that want to avoid getting some serious GAS. I went from having a JV-1000 and a Keytar, to having those plus an M-Audio 88se, the MusicXPC Professional C4 (on it's way to me now), an M-Audio 49 key midi controller, and soon as I get my computer, the East/West Symphonic Gold package... Damn guys, this could end up getting dangerous! Cheers, SG You're on your own, SG. I think I blew my allottment of poor-taste posts when I started to talk about the 'horse' in a picture that included a very big cheeseburger and some interesting waitresses in another thread. I'd post about GAS, but it would be too obvious. I'd post about GAS and SHEEP, but it's been done. Of course, given a bit of time, I think I could come up with a mildly interesting post that includes GAS, SHEEP, and Sven Golly. Just to make it interesting, I'd put CNEGRAD, Dave Horne, and Gangsu in there somewhere. I've got enough fodder for something truly outlandish and it's just about to come together. I consider it my duty and obligation to post a few off-topic insincerities whenever I can. Otherwise, all we get to talk about is old cables that rot and what to do about 'em. Other than that, How has life been treating you, SG and what are you going to wear to that Halloween party that's coming up? (Didja see my sheep costume picture?) You Baaaaaaaaaad boy. Synthetic's discussion about how to get the lead synth tone on 'A Remark You Made' brought back some good memories of working on that synth. It was my first analog synth. In fact it was my first synth (duh)... So, I added his quote to my signature line. Occassionally folks around here will come up with some winning stuff that shouldn't pass from the front of our minds so quickly. So, I use it in my signature line. If I don't have anything to work with at the moment, I'll just use something extroadinarily tedious. It helps to mix it up. How do you like my witch? Remind you of (Gangsu) anybody (Gangsu)? Oh. burningbusch
Funny I was going to start a different thread saying that the original S90 is still the one to have. The new piano sounds on the ES are OK, but sound like a lot of other Yamaha pianos. The PLG-AP gets you in the same ballpark, IMHO. If the ES soundset had some killer strings, brass, ac. guitars etc. and really elevated the Yamaha sounds to a new level, that would be something, but to me they don't. Almost all of the best Yamaha sounds can be found in the S90. The size and versatility of the original S90 is unique. It's a keeper, especially for gigging. And it's half the price of Nord Stage. eric
Busch - I agree with you and had already decided not to make the incremental upgrade to the S90ES, particularly due to size and need for a new case. That said, I am still intrigued by the size and form factor of the Nord STAGE. But it is such a pricey beast that I would be hard pressed to buy it and keep the S90. There are things the S90 does that the STAGE does not do and I think I would miss them more than I would benefit from the compactness features of the STAGE. One major benefit to a keyboard like the S90 vs. the STAGE is the ease of selecting sounds on the fly - separate bank buttons to reveal all the sounds on the fly and then dedicated buttons to select the sound - much better than scrolling with buttons or a dial. Also, I like the 4 control sliders on the S90 - I use them constantly and don't see a feature like this duplicated in the STAGE. Unless I come into a windfall all of a sudden, I think I'll stick with the S90 for awhile. Regards, Eric
MusicaL
I don't have the S90, I have the S80. What I like about the S90ES and my motifES is the multi/pattern/song mode. In the Motif I can use a pattern or song mode to have 16 sounds available to me for on the fly layering or changes in leads, etc. The S80 can't do that. I believe the S90 doesn't either. The S90ES however has multi mode which does... That to me, is a huge advantage to the S90ES. I tend to play with a few select sounds (about 12) that I alternately layer or use solo. For variety's sake, I layer patches and modify patch volumes often during a song. I also like to layer my lead voices, which this mode allows me to do with a push of a button.... My 2 cents. aL Gear: Yamaha MODX8, Mojo 61, NS2 73, C. Bechstein baby grand.
eric
Al, I've never used this on the S90, but I *think* the functionality exists to set up a Song with 8 or 16 sounds available...I use Master mode with pointers to various Voice and Performance sounds. The most sounds I typically need at one time is 4 on more complex splits/layers. The 2 things that really make me drool to update to the S90ES include 128 voice poly and 8 insert FX. MusicaL
Eric, I think you can set up a song on the S90 where different patches are assigned the same or different midi channels. The trouble is (if it's the same as the S80) it's nearly impossible to switch off or on any of the sounds at any given time with the push of a button. You have to scroll through menus and activate or deactivate a sound... not sure how! Turn midi off, volume down? Dunno!! But, in any event it's cumbersome. The nice thing about the motif and the S90ES in Pattern/Song/Mutli mode is that you see which patches are on and which ones are turned off, because the buttons are lit. You need to layer your EP? Just add a little piano to it. You need to layer your Piano with Organ, push the channel button containing the organ patch and voila. Want to turn down the organ, keep the mixing window open, and use the slider to turn it down. On a typical song, I use any combination of Piano, EP, Strings, Pad, Brass, Organ and lead(s). Usually, it's Piano and/or EP, String and pad (at different times) Organ, and synth leads. I could be using 5 to 7 patches in one song. So, performance mode is out -- besides it's not a multitimbral mode, so I can't trigger selected sounds from another keyboard. The nice thing about the Pattern/Song/Multi mode is that you don't have to program any master modes. It's all there for you to use. If you need a different set of voices, (and I don't) program another Pattern/Song/Multi.. With the push of one button you have another 16 voices to play with... It's simple. I am just surprised that it's taken this long to come up with this feature. aL Gear: Yamaha MODX8, Mojo 61, NS2 73, C. Bechstein baby grand. DanL
Thats a cool sounding approach Al. I spent time programming a bunch of masters so I can control my electro from the ES keyboard. One master might call up an EP from the electro and have a voice or performance from the ES that I can layer in with the faders, another might call up an internal voice or performance. I have a "lower manual" setting programmed too so I can do a 2 manual organ w/ the electro. It's a lot easier for me that way and I don't have to pay attention to the fine print on the display (by bifocals have just been ordered!). I just have a little cheat sheet w/ my master setups, and I put them all in a relative order, like acoustic piano and layers are on bank A, EP's and such are bank B, pads are on bank C, etc. The best thing is there are several ways to get the same results as our different setup preferences show. EWventhough I have both the S90 and MotifES8 I haven't done a close compare of the differences. I find Mixmode to be ackward with the GET/PUT to move to different templates. I use Master mode (usually pointing to voices/performances though you can have it pooint to mix mode) which does a very nice job of supporting external synths and I can move instantly to completely different setups, with patch changes.
