bnabound
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie at dealing with keyboards and am trying to link my Casio Privia PX100 to the computer so I can record some of the music I play. I've got a midi cable already but I'm not sure if that's enough? I'm assuming I need some sort of recording software but can you guys help me and let me know if there's anything else missing and also which software you'd recommend? Thanks :-) Maria
SilverDragonSoun
How much do you want to spend? You could get something like cakewalk home studio or DigiDesign for cheaper. If your serious about getting something top of the line you could look at Sonar by cakewalk, Cubase by Yamaha, I mean Steinberg and Pro Tools. Pro Tools is the industry standard but you could wind up spending serious coin if you go that route. DirtyRubberDuck
Maria, Try going to http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/ and download a program from the "MIDI Sequencers" section. They have a number of free sequencing programs that can at least get you started. (As long as you don't mind the pop-up ads). They also have demos of professional sequencers that you can download and try out. You'll also need a MIDI interface for your computer. You can get them at music stores for around $40. Then just connect the "MIDI out" from your keyboard to the "MIDI in" on the interface, and you have a 50-50 chance that it will work! Seriously, there are plenty of helpful people on this forum that can help you with any problems you encounter, although computer bugs can take a while to iron out. WARNING: You are entering a seriously addictive hobby. Proceed with caution. Warning signs include spending hours on end staring at a computer screen while your family and friends go unnoticed. Have fun! DRD
bnabound
LOL you guys are cool Thanks for the help. I've got Cakewalk Home Studio but wasn't sure if that was enough to make the keyboard record to the PC nor was I brave enough to delve into it yet!!! So DRD - if I don't get the Midi interface I can't record to the PC? I've used the Midi cable already to convert some midi files and play them from the PC to the keyboard. But if I understand you correctly, the other way around I'd need that interface, right? And thanks for the warning!!! Good to know, though I can safely say that I will ignore it and proceed with forgetting all about family or friends
DirtyRubberDuck
bnabound, Uh, no, sorry if you already are connecting the keyboard to the computer and playing MIDI files you already have a built-in MIDI interface on the computer. However, MIDI data only goes one way in a given connection. When you play sequences from your computer through your keyboard, you have connected the MIDI "OUT" from the computer to the MIDI "IN" on your keyboard. Practically speaking, you will want an additional connection from the MIDI "out" of the keyboard to the MIDI "in" on the computer. Hopefully, whatever you are connecting to on your computer has two MIDI connectors? DRD
