Custom Stand?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a stand similar to This One used here by my personal favorite keyboardist Janne Warmen. It's on a 45 degree slant (or more?) down towards the audience. Most keyboard stands that do have slants go up away from the audience, and also, putting my wrists in a very uncomfortable position when playing standing as I do. The angle of this stand would make it as comfortable as a keytar is to play, without the octave limitation, which is badass.

Anyone know where I can get something like this? I've asked around, but haven't heard of anywhere. There are a lot of really cool custom stands out there that allow for more movement/animation on stage, but this one seems like it should really exist already.

A similar setup was discussed a while back on the forums... do a search for Derek Sherinian; his setup with Billy Idol was basically the same as the picture you linked to, but had 4 boards.

You could also visit Derek\'s website , where he has pics posted. :thu:

Thirdly, you could pick up the October 2005 issue of Keyboard, that has an article about Derek and his rig. ;)

Of course, all that being said, his stands are custom jobs made of Ultimate Support A-Frame parts, cut to length. Not terribly difficult to do, once you've got the design done. :)

(oh, and there are no commercially available stands that offer this angle; outside of the metal genre, there aren't really many keyboard players that are so blatantly unable to deal with their guitar envy... ;):P )

Cheers,

True dat G, I heard his version of Tarkus on the ELP tribute album Encores, Legends and Paradox. I almost cried is was so guitar laiden and therefore so lame.

In fact only John Novello and Igor ( the YES guy ) brought the wood on that album.

Peace

Oh hey now, you didn't need to bring the guitar envy into this! I mean true, guitarists tend to get the ladies a little more reliably, but still. I just like the crowd being able to see that I'm doing something, since usually I get such a bad mix that they can't hear me, lol.

Hmm... that's me though, envious of guitar players and their mobility on stage, and angry at bass players for having the option to move and not doing it.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll definately be checking out these sites more thoroughly when I'm not at work!

QuikLok used to, and may still, make an X-style stand who's single tier arms would tilt in the manner you're discussing. Model # is T-8. In an article about keyboard stands in Keyboard earlier this year, Tom Brislin mentioned using one. Here's the link: http://www.keyboardmag.com/story.asp?sectioncode=32&storycode=163

There are also some fuzzy photos of Tom playing his Nord Electro on the T-8 at www.spiraling.net

Regarding Sherinian's stands ... I don't think those arms that attach to the tubing are available anymore. I wanted to buy a truckload of them for an idea I had about making a giant workstation out of Gibraltar drum hardware, but Ultimate said that they may be out of production already.

According to the guy I talked to, they may be doing away with A-frame stands and hardware completely. I could be completely wrong, or I could have spoken to someone who was mal-informed.

Quik-Lok's website is down and I don't see any on other sites. Damn them! If the T-8 is still in production, then I owe you my deepest thanks. If not, I shall have to hate you for taunting me with the fact that it used to exist, lol. Gives me a good place to start looking though! No one happens to have one of these by chance, do they?

The T-8 is not listed on Quik-Lok's website, but a Google search turned up numerous hits, so you might find one somewhere. Keep an eye on eBay, too. Take heart, the truth is out there.....

You could take a wooden sawhorse, notch a couple of 2x4's to get the right angle, paint the whole thing black and call it a day. It would have that old rustic vs. hi-tech feel to it....

For anyone that is curious, I did find the T-8 on Sam Ash. I only need one, since I still really like going nuts on my flat board, but I think I'll pick up a few just because I don't know when I'll ever see them again!
